Author Topic: New 331 for my car but I need some help. (Read 1100 times)

As some of you may know I have a blower on my car and am currently running 10 lbs of boost on my stock shortblock. I am going to make one hell of a stout motor this winter so that I don't have to worry about throwing a rod and doing some serious $$$$ damage to my other parts in the engine. I am shooting for 500-550 rwhp and right now I am running about 430 now that I have fixed a vacuum leak.

Here is the combo I have now:
New Boss Block
Forged Scat 3.25" crank and forged Scat H beam rods
I will pick up the appropriate Probe dish pistons once I decide on what head to use (cc based decision)
I currently have a Trick Flow Stage 1 cam to go in but think I may change my mind and go with an Anderson Ford B41.
I have a Professional Product Typhoon Intake (Edelbrock Performer RPM Clone)

My question comes down to heads. I have AFR 165's now and am considering using them. They have the same exhaust ports as the AFR 185's and the intake flows pretty close to them. I think I will give up 17cfm at .500 lift. Do you guys think it would be worth it to swap in some AFR 185's, Canfield 192/195's or stick with the 165's as they will be good enough. I am also considering getting a Trick Flow Track Heat Intake since it should give me some more ponies in the higher rpm's.

I can't imagine the 165's being big enough for a 500hp motor. I have Trick Flows w/170 intakes on my NA 331. Your motor's going to need a lot more air than mine. If it were me, I'd look at 185's, Vic Jr's, or Canfields.

FYI, I've heard AFR valves suck. Supposedly you need either valve lash caps or entirely new valves if you're going to abuse the motor properly.

Darreld,

From everything that I've read/heard/understand, the 185's would be better suited to your application.

You can sell the 165's (very cheap) to me to help offset the cost of the new 185's.....

That's the first I've ever heard about that (not that that would be a big surprise or anything). The rocker studs that AFR uses are known to be total crap and need to be replaced with ARP studs, but I've never heard of having to change the valves. I'm running the AFR valves in the 185's on my 408 with no problem, and I abuse it plenty and have a lift of .544 @.050.

Thanks for the input guys. I've pretty much decided to go ahead go with different heads. It appears that Canfield are no longer made. I was in contact with Jay over at Camshaft Innovations today and he recommended going with TFS 170's or if I wanted something that would be MUCH better go with their 190's. Back to doing some research I guess. Anyone have experience with one of those heads?

Apparently the new valves AFR is using have some issue or another. There's a member on mustangforums with a monster 383 that has trashed his valve tips.

I have TFS Twisted Wedge 170's on my 331 and I love them. They really are a better design than standard wedge heads. They unshroud the valves and angle them for better flow.

I just picked up a set of Edelbrock Victor Jr heads, crane gold rockers and rocker girdle for a killer price. Anyone looking for a good set of AFR 165's? I can't wait to get this projected started!! I should have one bad *&% engine when it is done!!

I ordered a SFI flywheel and balancer, Probe dished pistons and some misc crap today. I just have to get Jay Allen from Camshaft Innovations to call me back with a way to pay him and then my camshaft will be here. I think This MIGHT be ready for Turkey day! :craz

It is actuallly a 306 but it will find another home some day. It is acutally a pretty good motor. It has about 1000 miles, balanced and forged flat top pistons. It has AFR 165 heads, 1.7 crane RR, head studs, Ford E cam. I would guess the engine has 350-375 hp without the blower. I wanted to "upgrade" before I did something to it and took out $5000 in parts in the process. I'll eventually sell it to help pay for the monster that I am building now. :ecit

Hmmmmm, you need to sell engine to finance new one, Duane needs an engine that runs..........

Maybe a deal could be had, although I would suggest a written agreement that sold engine could not be worked on by new owner.

We'll I must have quite the talent on purchasing the wrong heads. I mentioned that I was going to have a custom billet cam made for my engine and the cam guy said to ditch the Victor Jr heads I purchased and get a set of Twisted Wedge Fast As Cast 190 cc heads. Luckily I sold the Victor heads for what I had in them, minus shipping costs that is. At least I know I'll have one hell of a combo when it is done.

By making this change it also means I need to have my heads fly cut for TW heads. They went to UPS yesterday and are now somewhere between WA and Probe Industries in CA. When the heads come in and the pistons come back I'll be ready for balancing/blue printing. I can't wait for this to be done. it should be a FUN car to drive. :ecit

I think I'll start taking some of the accessories off the old engine tonight and get it ready to sell. That will help me pay for the new engine which is quickly going way past my original budget. It will be a much better engine when it is all said and done though. I really think I'll end up with 550+rwhp that is streetable.

How much lift are you running? Depending on duration, you can run quite a bit with the TFS heads before you run into clearance problems.

I have no idea on the specs of the cam at this time. I called Probe and asked them how much lift I could have before running into problems and the guy said only about .520. I knew at that point I would need them fly cut.
