Anyone in Norcal have engine-swapping hardware to loan/rent?
« on: February, 08, 2012, 05:27:36 AM »
Hi Norcal Stangfixers. I don't know where the regional forums went, so I can only think to post here. I'm needing to do an engine swap on my '65 fb. I have a cherry-picker but I don't have the carb plate or that doo-hickey with the crank on it that lets you change the angle that the engine is hanging at as it comes out.  If anyone in Northern California (or anywhere) has these items, may I borrow or rent?  I'm shooting for the weekend of February 11-12 or 18-19-20 to get started on this. TIA

I have that doo-hickey that is used with chains which you can borrow but I will need it back as soon as you are done for I'm getting ready to use it as well.  So it would be a fair amount of commuting for you.  You can't find a local rental outlet which might carry one?

You can buy one for around $40 from lots of places. With the time spent driving to pick one up and return it and all it might serve better to just buy one. You can always sell it when done.

I have a carb plate that I'm not going to be using for a while (hopefully!!).  But, I'm a wee bit north of ya up in Redding.

$16 shipped.....    http://www.ebay.com/itm/ENGINE-PULL-LIFT-PLATE-4-BARREL-HOLLEY-4150-CARB-INTAKE-/190331577164?hash=item2c50a5634c&item=190331577164&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr
Load levelers are nice but carb plates work well. Using the front hole, you can get a good angle on the motor to install with trans.

I just use the carb plate and remove the engine by itself. If the tranny needs to come out, I then drop it with the bellhousing. I install them the same way. Do it all the time by myself. One of the disadvantages to living in the sticks with no neighbors.

The first time I installed the motor and tranny combo, it was a PITA to get the angle correct and the rear of the car high enough.

Hell, that plate is so cheap, I can't make one for that price.    Maybe I should get one just for my tool stash.

My brother Del65, in Modesto,  has a load loadleveler, we used that with the chains attached to opposite corners of the heads, to pull his engine and thus did not need a carb plate, plus, the intake had already been removed.

Thanks for all the replies and offers of help. I'm leaning toward the eBay carb plate for $16 -- thanks for the tip Ryan! It's a sign of the times that spending $16 for a one-time-use tool is cheaper than two round trips to borrow one.

P.S. Didn't there used to be a Norcal subforum on this site? How do y'all organize the poker games these days?

I bought a nice load leveler at Kragen it was worth every penny!!!  I have done it with a crappy leveler and a nice smooth leveler one was
much less stressful than the other. I I wouldn't use a carb plate with the tranny attached, too much weight.
