AOD aprts in a 4R70W?
« on: January, 23, 2012, 08:44:35 AM »
Looking to keep things simple on the AWD attempt. I have heard that you can eliminate the electronic control part of the 4R70 transmission if you swap the internals with an AOD? Anyone have any factual info on this? If not, I am set up to use the EEC 4 if necessary using the factory settings. Also, is there a piggyback add on tuner for the EEC that will control the shift points? What brand and where?

I have been looking into this myself so I don't have facts, BUT, I believe the key is to put the 4R70W internals into the AOD. The 4R70W guts are stronger but the AOD uses the TV cable instead of a computer.
There are trans controllers and Hot Rod magazine just did a write up this month on several using a GM trans. They ranged from ~$600 to over $1000 but they like data logging and programming shift firmness and so on.
I did find a manual shift valve body conversion that eliminates the computer in the 4R70W which is almost as expensive as a stand alone computer conversion.
