What did you drive in high school?
« on: December, 21, 2011, 10:49:42 AM »
Whenever I pass a high school thats nearby, can't help but notice all the new and newer cars/vehicles , not to mention really nice sportscars in the parking lot/s, nothing new here I know!  I guess a part of me is jealous as I drove my 66 Plymouth Valiant(no ac, no ps, no pb, even no ac/heat!) from 70- 72, then inherited my grandmothers 63 Pontiac lemanns which the tranny gave out halfway in my last year of HS, then had to ride the schoolbus the rest of the year:(.  Many of my friends were kind of in the same boat as most parents could not afford nicer cars back then, but none of us ever complained!! Never!!!  We did have kind of like parties where we'd get together and clean and polish our cars. I did change my own oil and was at Hi-lo frequently! Oh those were some good times!  Gas cost wasnt a big deal at .20-.25 cents per gallon, I once was running really low on gas, found a dime on the floorboard and made it home! Lol

My youngest daughter drives my old 98 rav4 of what drove I for my job as a physical therapist(homehealth) it now has right at 300k on it! She takes excellent care of it and when she is graduated, we'll buy here a nice used car. She may get to have some to choose from, but I make the final decision.
Overall, the youngest is taking the best care of her car, more like I did, well, not quite like I did.

I tell them, if you don't take care of your horse, it will die and you will be on foot!

So, what did you drive?

Well I got my license in 1990 and went out and bought an 84 camaro. V8 with a four barrel carb. Winter was not fun in it. Probably more car than a 16 year old should have.  Got me into a little trouble.
I was in auto shop all through high school, so I did all my own repairs. Paid my own insurance and gas too. Which was about 99 cents then.

1975 Mercury Comet with an i6 250.  Orange, black vinyl top, big chrome bumpers and a black vinyl bench seats front and back that had so much armor all build up from years of care by the previous owner that it was a frictionless environment.   Made it fun when dating though, I was sure to only right turns.

Started driving in legally '66. In 1968 and '69(graduated), I drove a 1945 Ford pickup (had a heater) in Iowa that my Dad and I did the body and paint on and Mom and I did the interior. Bought it from my Dad. I did all the mechanical on it too. Sold it about half way thru the senior year and bought a '57 Chevy. Did everything on it too. We always had times for getting together and working or cleaning the cars before the weekend events.

My daughter drove a 1973 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon (cheap and ran great) and was happy with it plus she maintained it. Later she got a 1986 Isuzu P'up on her own as a junior in high school. She graduated in '90.

My son rode a 1982 Honda 250 and then a 1963 Fairlane that we restored together in the early 90's.

I had a 1974-75 (can't remember the year) Vega in 78. It started life as a pee green 4 cyl. I painted it blue and drove the snot out of it till I finished HS in 79. It is by far, one of THE worst POS cars ever produced, but I did have a lot of fun in it.

In 1980 when I went to Juco, I moved up in society and bought a 76 Nova hatchback with a straight 6.

Gosh Laurie, I don't think I even knew what a mustang was back then! Lol. In about 74, my brother bought a 67 mustang coupe(v8, loaded) for 500bucks, that's when I fell in love with the mustang! But didnt get one until the day I began the resomod on mine!  However I did have a 67 cougar in 76.
I actually looked for a 66 Plymouth valiant recently, but for the 1500 the guy wanted for the rusted out thing-- No way!

How nice to have that precious car from your HS days ) who would have known!

1967 Mustang Coupe 6 cyl. Bought for $900 in 1979, burned oil but had new paint & carpet. Headliner sagged, so we replaced that. Rebuilt engine, spent many hours painting doors, interior metal, guages (used Testors model paint). Got it looking fantastic inside & out.

Went to college, got stolen the first semester.  :rant

Still miss that car.

Oh goodness...lets see.

When I turned 16 I borrowed my dad's "extra" car that was an '82 F150 for about six months and saved up money.  The truck was really basically a hunting and hauling bbq pits type of truck.  Not pretty but ran like a beast.

Then I bought a '80 Firebird, rebuilt the motor, stuck a four barrel on it and had a lot of fun in that car.  A year or so later I totaled the '80 Firebird and took up payments on an '87 Mustang my oldest sister was looking to trade in.  During my senior year, my other sister needed a car and I was mowing lawns with a friend of mine and really needed a pickup.  So my dad gave me the '82 F150 and I gave my sister the Mustang.

Drove the F150 the first couple of years in college then inherited a Ford Escort that I used to commute to college.  Not long after I got out of college I gave the Escort to my sister and bought a '92 Nissan 240SX.

Which I dumped my senior year to buy my 1st brand -new car...

Figures doesn't it! Whatd you get after that?

A Datsun B210 econobox.  :hs Only way to explain it - still in shock from the crime.

I recovered, bought a '67 k code rustbucket. Fast as crap, but the rust was getting it. Wrecked it, fixed it, sold it for 3500 in 1987. :shrug

Bought a 1981 Gran Prix. Great car, used it to tow the boat. Then a Jeep Grand Wagoner, then a Volvo 240, then a BMW 525, then a BMW M5 (still have it), then a Dodge Ram (tow vehicle).

After the M5, i got my Dad's '68 coupe when he passed - the current project car. Just heard back from the machine shop that the 5.0 roller block has been zero decked, need to pick it up & get to building.  :yah
