What the hell is it with Mustangs and speed bumps? I noticed a small amount of fluid, under about where the tranny pan is at, on the concrete when I pulled the stang out last sat. to go on a cruise (swmbo was out of town with some other women....hot diggidy dog). I have an aod tranny btw. When I rebuilt and installed the aod, I put one of those thingys in the pan where you drill a hole and screw it in with the gaskets and nut on the inside and can then easily drain the fluid from the pan when needed, without making such a big mess to remove the pan and change the filter. I put the '66 on the ramps to check it this afternoon and slide under there and wtf? The little thingy is bent to heck and leaking. I now remember the last speed bump I went over Sat. nite I heard something go bam, but thought maybe it was the exhaust pipes again. I had to reinstall an exhaust clamp last time that happened. Well this gives me a good excuse to change the fluid/filter and install the new chrome pan i got from summitracing a year or so ago. I knew I would need that thing for some reason...lol I am still recovering from the neck surgery so this should be fun tomorrow morning.

Yikes! I'm having second thoughts now about my recent AOD mod. I thought about where I was gonna put the plug, side or bottom. There's enough room in the right rear corner of the pan to either. Additionally, either location would help drain the pan making removal a little easier (read, slightly less messy). I figured draining from the bottom would get more out. I was concerned a little about it being easier to get hit on the bottom, but figured (hoped) it would be a minimal concern so I went with a bottom install. I gotta rethink my choice now!

I've always been told with a chrome pan it's not if it will leak but how soon.

I would not put one of the diy drains in again. Just get a pan that already has the correct drain bolt in it as it sits flush with the bottom of the pan. The chrome pan with drain costs about $30 right now.

I changed the pan and filter/fluid out today. I have 3 magnets in the pan and boy were those things gummed up with sludge. I rebuilt the tranny myself a couple of years ago and cleaned things very well. I am guessing the new clutches etc wearing in are going to shed some sludgy stuff. Yuck. I am using the synthetic blend Mercon fluid to help it run a little cooler, supposedly. I have a large cooler on the front of the radiator/ac cooler to help cool it down. The chrome pan fits well and is functional.

I just did some searching and found better pics of the Summit pan on an Ebay auction. Just a heads up, the plug isn't flush on that one either. The pic on Summit's page just makes it look like it's recessed.
