If they want me they will have to do better than this. I am not going to beg. I will play their game and say no thanks knowing if they don't counter I am okay but if they do I will be prepared for that too.

Sounds like you got it worked out.  Best of luck.

2- don't put the "what it will take" in the letter - properly worded, the letter will do that. Be careful to not close the door - use phrases like "at this time", etc.

I thought that went without saying....or is that what I said?  I dunno, I just make doughnuts.  Wait, I don't even do that.  I just babysit.

you guys are great!
I will tell you, I have plenty of options. I'm not tooting my horn but I have a unique skill set based on training and development opportunities I had. They are not Rocket Science but not easily replicated just due to the circumstances.
Saying that, I will also explain the company a little bit. We were Alcan, a spin-off of Alcoa back in the 20's. Alcan stands for Aluminum Company of Canada and Alcoa stands for Aluminum Company of America. Both are "primary" aluminum producers as well as converters of aluminum. In 05 Alcan spun off the "Rolling Mills" due to getting too big. Now as Novelis we are just a converter of aluminum into sheet for building products, beer cans, automotive, aerospace, etc.
I live in Russellville KY because there is a state of the art rolling mill called Logan Aluminum here. Novelis owns about half of that mill. The other owners were ARCO which is owned by BP. We all know BP's big spill, that forced the sale of their half of the mill. Novelis couldn't buy it due to the government blocking it. Novelis already has a majority of the market.
However, the Logan Aluminum company wants me to work for them. They cannot offer me a job because the Novelis owners have told them to leave me alone. I could "quit" my Novelis job and go to work for Logan Aluminum at any time. The other owners have offered me a job and continue to have head hunters call or email me. I could quit my job and go to work for them.
With in Novelis, we have established a "Global" team. That group has offered me a job but I would have to live overseas.
This current offer best fits my skill set and would be the biggest benefit to Novelis. However, my current boss I have known for 21 years. He has assured me he does not want to lose me from his group but will not hold me back if I decide to go.
I feel like I am in the drivers seat.

Married to Tara, that makes me the TARA-fied one!

well, I turned down the offer to relocate. They didn't try to counter or anything. The Manager who made the offer did plead with my boss to have me help the new engineers and the facility get started. So even though I won't relocate, it looks like I will be spending a lot of time in Kennesaw anyway. In fact I am heading up North the the current facility tomorrow by request.
I'm a little pissed that they know they need me but won't make an acceptable offer.
I had a long talk with my boss tonight, he was in town visiting the Mill. He was really glad that I decided to stay in his group and his boss was too, even his boss's boss. He explained that it was in my and his best interest to support this effort so I guess I will.

Sounds like it will work out very well for you, Craig. Happy for you.

By giving them all the help and support you can down there you should also erase any "bad" mojo your offer rejection may have created in certain camps. In the end, you get what it sounded like you really wanted...which was to stay put. Good deal.

+1, not in your shoes but I bet you feel relieved. Probably stinks down there anyway.

Thanks everyone, it was a really hard decision. The new job would have been a good fit but I'm happy that I am staying put. I talked with my boss about the fact that I'm gone pretty much every week. He told me that I am to nice and need to say no sometimes. He said I am in control of my schedule and if I need to spend more time at home then I need make it happen. Overall I am happy with my decision and so is my family.
Thanks to all of you for your input
