The Rabbits are invading California
« on: October, 14, 2011, 09:04:32 AM »
Well the Rabbit posse is continuing the western US tour. Looks like we should be heading to California next.

Plans are not set in stone yet, but we are flying into san fransico in the morning  Tuesday  Oct 25 and leaving Saturday the 29th.

We are planning to drive up the pacific coastal highway to see the redwoods on Tue and wed. Then staying around redding on wed. Thur and Fri heading to the Sacramento area and  roseville to check it out. Not sure what other areas yet.

Any suggestions on must see things on the way?

Why the heck would you want to go to Roseville???  :-P.   Drop me a PM and I can help setup a meetup with the Sacramento area clowns.

Is this a vacation trip?

not really a vacation  but if I don't let jen see the redwoods  she said she would not go. so I figured what better way  to sell jen on  california then a nice drive up the coast .

as far as roseville someone told us  that was a nice area that we might like to move to .

Hey, drop me a quick PM and we can hook up in an evening.  Redding's a nice area.  Gets a little warm in the summer, but very mild winters.

PS...HOLY CRAP...I still have an accelerator cable rolling in the back of my car that I never sent.  YIKES!!!  still need it?

Back in 1980ish my wife and I got a brain fart and moved to Roseville.  Lasted there for 19 frickin months.  Moved back to the bay, never looking back.  Maybe Johnpro was already up there and I could smell him? -LOL,  Don't know. Hopefully that area has changed but was extremely backwards in time, back then.  Enjoy the Redwoods.  Drive along the Avenue of the Giants.

Now, I must clarify there's nothing wrong with Sack of Tomatoe for SacBill and Sac69 live there.  They're buddies.

So what's the problem with roseville? Not a nice area?
We just heard it was nice.

We may also go to san fransico on Friday. Not sure if we have enough time yet.

There are few who I have ever heard made it out of Roseville alive.

The Maynards, Guy Fieri and Molly Ringwall.

Well we are heading out tomorrow.  :steer

Planning to leave san fran between 1230 and 1.
Heading out across the golden gate bridge and up to the PCH.
How far do you guys think we would get on the pch by about 7?
We were thinking about staying around fort bragg, but not sure we would make it that far.  :shrug

We don't want to stop at every little tourist spot along the way. It's more about the drive. The only spot I know for sure Jen wants to stop is at bodega bay. She is a major Hitchcock fan.
Anything else along the way we should consider stopping at?

I assume it is 12:30pm departure?  and stopping for the night by 7pm?  If so, that a lot of time unless you plan to stop at every tiny town along the coast.  If you are going hwy 1 all the way up to where it connnects to hwy 101 up at Leggett, CA, that's about a 225 mile trek that will take you 5+ hours based upon a small coastal hwy speed.

Did you have a place planned to stay that night?   The Benbow Inn, south of Garberville, is a pretty neat spot along the Eel River.

Were you planning to go up to Eureka and then over 299 to Redding?

I was talking about 1230 pm to 7pm. Jen doesn't want to drive in the dark.

The plan us to take hwy 1 up the coast and then stop for the night where ever we end up around 7pm. Then Wednesday morning continue on up to the redwoods. Then head down to redding from there. We have no hotels booked yet, just going to see where the road takes us.

I don't plan on stopping at every little town, but we will need to stop every 2 hours or so for the little one. Jen is freaking out because she is reading online that people are saying it takes several days to get to the redwoods. I told her that is  because most people stop at every pullout and tiny town.

Once you get up to Leggett you can take the old hwy 101 which is called avenue of the giants.  There you will drive amongst some very beautiful  Redwood trees.

Again, if you take the coastal route (Hwy 1) it will take 5+ hours so that will soak up a fair amount of your afternoon ending you around Leggett at 6pm or so.  You might consider finding a place around there or up in Garberville as I mentioned earlier.  Next day, finish ave of the giants and then head up over 299 towards Redding.  Just depends on your schedule and when you need to be where on what day.

Thanks Craig.

We do plan on driving the avenue of the giants. As far as a schedule, we don't really have one. Wednesday we thought we would stay near redding. Thursday check out Sacramento. Maybe san fran on Friday if we have time. We are really just winging it on this trip. Just want to check out a few areas.

If you want to avoid driving in the dark, then you'll probably want to be at your overnight site by about 6pm.  It's been pretty dark here at 7.

What! I thought the sun always shines in cali. Wth?

7 is kind of the latest we will be stopping hopefully. Shooting for 6 or 630. Dark doesn't bother me.

7pm in the Redwoods?  Isn't that when the Trolls of the infamous Emerald triangle come out looking for food and children?

Sounds like they're jumping from the airplane right into the rent a car and boogying immediately up the lost coast.
