Radiator to hood seal
« on: September, 29, 2011, 06:10:32 AM »
Can I assume that the seal is fastened in the same manner for a 68 as it is for a 65?  I had to replace Shags radiator support losing the factory staple holes.  Here's a pic of Reds seal which I was planning to duplicate.

When I installed mine, I put the staples under instead of on top. I had no idea which way was correct.

Mark,
That's why I posted a pic.  Though I've seen most Mustangs stapled like I did with Red, it might not be correct.  So you have the staple heads hiding under the big rubber flap then they go through the radiator support and then through the small rubber flap underneath and then folded over?   Hmmmmmmmm

Kind of, I did not run the small flap under the support.

Here is a 65 Original and a 68 Original. Staples are put in from the top.

So it looks like I did Red's correctly with the small flap residing under the radiator support?  I will say though that I do like Mark's unstapled look.

8 or 9 staples?  Talking about getting anal......

How do you staple through the radiator support?  Seems like it'd be tough to go through the metal.

i never knew there was a seal there.  Does it actually do any good?

Yes, it will cause more air to go thru the radiator.

I thought they were only on one engine....either the 6 or the 8....but my memory may be failing.....lol

I think they were on the 6's, but I see no reason not to take advantage of sealing that up.

Here is the 66 and there was no seal on it. It was original when I bought it.

For 65-66, the radiator support seal was only installed on 6 cylinder cars.  But, the correct way, is with staples going through the top if you want to keep it on.

Thank you. I've been watching this one trying to figure out why I never saw such a thing on any of my cars. Now I'm asking the same as Mark. Why only on six cylinders?

Thanks Sir Charles for chiming in.  Can I assume all 67 and 68's had it as well?

6 cylinder 67-68 had them and also big blocks.  '68 Shelby used them too.

Actually, it all makes sense now because Red originally was a T code, thus had one.  I just went through a bunch of pics of Shag (J code) back when I was doing the sheetmetal and found a bunch of pics of it's original radiator support with no staple holes.  Just two big ole nasty hood pin holes.

Uhm, I've got an original '68 289 2V with an original rad support, and it did have the seal. It also has the A/C option, which throws in the big block radiator and cooling fan, so maybe the A/C cars got the full BB clloing treatment including seal. Don't know, but I do know this one is unmolested, and had the seal.

IIRC I read  on another forum that depending on the plant the car was assembled they might have used something other than a staple to attach the seal.

My 67 San Jose built S code had staples

Everything I have read said that in 67 only the 6 cylinder and big block cars had the radiator seal. I don't know about the other years.
