New Project, All Wheel Drive Mustang?
« on: September, 22, 2011, 04:57:10 AM »
Thought has been running around my head for a couple of years now. I have looked at a couple of donor vehicles but haven't found anything that I think I can get stuffed under the hood. My goal would be 0-60 in less than 3 seconds. Any Ideas on a platform that cold be used? Also would like it to produce 400HP or so. Please throw in your input.

Na, those are not what I'm looking for. I was thinking of a Borg Warner 1372 or 4472 transfer case to get power to the front, I think it can be had for under 500 bucks. The rest of the crap I can find in the junkyard.

I wonder how much you could rob from a smashed Audi, maybe a TT or a sport ute?

I have had the same thoughts, how about the new ecoboost AWD SHO Taurus?

Married to Tara, that makes me the TARA-fied one!

how about a subaru impreza wrx sti.  A guy around town here is rumored to have close to 600 hp in an AWD platform.

The one thing I've always loved about Mustangs was that they were RWD. If I can't kick the back end out once and a while...what's the point? It would be a very cool and fun project from an engineering viewpoint but the finished product wouldn't do it for me.

Pick a 4wd drive train you like, remove the body, install Mustang body after making needed mods to both chassis and body. Write big check to shop.

I dont think hes after the lifted mud truck idea.  I like the idea of a sleek AWD sleeper under some mustang skin.

I know that.....and I still say...pick the drive train....

It has been done many times. Older Mustang bodies on newer Mustang drive trains, why not use an AWD chassis and add the Mustang body. It will not have a Mustang drive train up front anyway so pick one and build it.

And I think the confusion in my above suggestion is 4WD vs AWD......when I grew up...it was all 4 wheel drive...this All wheel drive showed up when they wanted to separate the truck type and car type and a bit of a different style of mechanics. Sorry....showing my age again.

The previous pic was a joke.....haha

The hardest part in my opinion is gonna be finding the right drivetrain. Because the main difference between 4x4 and AWD is that an AWD system thinks and is controlled by computers so if needed it can send the right amount of power to one wheel. I dont know of a 4x4 system that thinks and reacts as fast as an AWD system.

If thought of putting an AWD system in a future Cobra or Daytona kit car build but theres definently alot of R&D and money involved.

My daily is an AWD 09 mitsubishi Ralliart that has a stock 0-60 of 5.5sec with only 220hp so with the right drivetrain you could definently get down to the 3's. Many Evos running 800hp to 1100hp all day and still street cars.

I would check out a guys build over on protouring.com, they have a  challenger , camaro SS, and cuda  being built with AWD.

Want something really cool/unique?  Find yourself an old 80's Audi Quattro.  Lots of power potential, and a pretty decent AWD platform to start with.  It's not going to be as advanced as something from today, but that's what's great about it.  You won't need computers for ABS, traction control, drivetrain management, etc.

Thanks, I would like to keep it simple with the electronics except the engine. Would love to use all Ford parts if possible. Thanks Dave for the link. I registered and can't wait to see the photos. Starfury, any idea what kind of power the Quattro can make?

I've seen that before. It reads a bit odd because the original article was in German.
