Cut Coils Today...Couldn't be more pleased with results
« on: August, 29, 2011, 03:27:26 PM »
Ever since i installed the Grab-A-Trak 620 Front Coil Springs on my 68, i was never really satisfied with the ride height.  They claimed to lower 1" from stock height, which im sure they did, but they were still about an inch too high for my taste.  I was patient and decided to wait to see if they would settle (as everyone was saying they would).  Well after a year, they didn't settle at all.  The leafs did, but not the coils.

Finally had time to pull them out and sliced 1/2 a coil off them.  The results? Perfection.  Take a look :)

And here is a before shot for comparison:

Looks great.  Is there a Arning drop or any other mods to the front?

Yeah. When i first put the coils in i did roller perches from John and the shelby drop all at the same time.

well I guess I know what I have to do now! Looks great!
I did the ORP perches and Arning drop with stock coils that were cut. It was too low so I bought the 620's and it sits like your "before" pic. I was hoping they would settle but if yours didn't mine probably won't either.

Married to Tara, that makes me the TARA-fied one!

It handles as good as can be expected with a stock front sway bar and no subframe connectors.  The ride is not harsh, to me at least.  I still have a horrible (in my eyes) lean in the rear that is not the leafs.  Driver side rear is a good 1/4 inch below pass side and probably more when i sit in it.  It really drives me crazy that the rear leans to the left but I honestly don't know of a solution.  Ive read around that its just a common problem in these cars.

Tad, I just graduated and am back home preparing for some job interviews.  Getting a job right now, especially in the civil engineering field, is about who you know.  And fortunately i know a few people who may be able to open some doors.  We'll see.

But yeah, thanks all for the nice comments.  I thought others would benefit from seeing how much of a drop 1/2 a coil gives so they could decide how to cut their own.  I know i certainly benefited from seeing others ride height when i was choosing my leafs.

I didn't cut the coils myself because i dont have those kind of tools (yet). I ran down the road to a machine shop / welder and asked him to cut em with a low heat method because i didnt really want to bust out the hacksaw.  He goes "why can't i just use a torch?" I replied, "Well ive read heat could damage spring rate, so if you have a cutting wheel or something, could you just use it?"  He goes "Whoever told you that is an idiot, you would have to heat these things at 600 degrees for 5 hours to damage them"  I just smiled and said "No torch please".  So i guess everyone on the internet is wrong according to welder bob, haha :shrug

well if the torch will "melt" the spring enough to cut it, it will soften it too.

Yeah, but it would only soften it an inch or so from the cut. I'm only guessing since I've never tried it. It would change the rate by a fraction, not near as much as taking part of the coil away though.
