This is why I never go into the auto parts store without looking up the part numbers online.  Saves time from dealing with people at the stores and can get my stuff and get out quickly.

I routinely do that....AND check their inventory listing if available. Still no luck. Majority of the time they still wanna "look it up"!

It's almost as fun buying tools at Sears. 

Last time I was at Sears for tools the clerk asked if they could help. I told them I was looking for a set of miniature flush cut pliers. They then asked "what are flush cut pliers?". After explaining what they were the clerk went and asked another employee. I overheard him respond "never heard of them". Yeah right, they got ya'll working in the area best suited to your knowledge right?! Next thing someone will have to explain what a prince and reed screwdriver is to them!

Guess the Sears management got confused about those brain surgeons. Overheard someone CALL them "tools", and thought they said they should WORK in tools!

My wife gets the same treatment when we go to lowes.  Blows their mind that some chick knows more about circular saw blades than the guy "selling" them.

I don't even go to autozone anymore because of the sheer ignorance of most of the employees. By their logic, If it isn't in the system, it must not exist, therefore, I'm the moron.
So I go across the street to o'reilly's, where a few gearheads work.

I've been going to the same O'reilly's for the longest time and they know me very well! I'm always asking for parts for something "old" and without application, they don't like that!  Used to, years ago, I could go into HiLo ( ), go where the bolt ben was, pick out what I want, go through the belt secton, pick out what I want, but it's not like that anymore!

It's rare that Gary goes into an auto parts with me, but if he does, I make sure I dominate the transaction with the salesperson!

Now if I walk in with full blown makeup, short skirt and heels (rare these days, but I do like to dress up now and then), I do get their attention(kind of fun!), but I feel really out of place, like, what's wrong with this picture! lol  However, I'm mostly in jeans, looking rather rough, hair frizzed from houston humidity, dirty fingernails, etc.  Looking more like a homeless person! lol but with money!

I hate going to parts stores or hardware, always takes at least an hour for the round trip!

Oh yes!! I love confusing counter people! I like how some give you that look like you're insane.

Sometimes if I'm feeling in a goofy mood and they ask year, make model, etc is this for? I tell them its going in a 66 Ford Mustang 302 auto C4 blah blah blah.... and they say oh we don't have a compatible part. Well duh.. you asked what car its for.. not what year/car I need parts from.

I had to giggle (in order to keep myself from smacking anyone) when I went in and bought a dual MC yesterday. I decided to go ahead and get a 75 granada one. The mustang guy I talked to wasn't there so this was some other guy.

Counter Guy: Don't you have a 66 murstang?
Me:  Umm yeah
Counter Guy: this is for a 75 granada
Me: Umm  yeah I know
Counter Guy: ... but its a for a 75.... granada
Me: Yes, I know. Its what I need.
Him: Are you sure?
Me: Yes.
Him: On a 66?..... Mustang?

I had to explain to this guy that if I got what was suppose to go in my 66, my brakes could all fail (again) and I could DIE. That there's other compatiable MCs out there that work. He still gave me that look like I was insane. 

Even if I got in there with the part numbers they still feel the need to double check I'm getting the correct part. 

That can be partially explained: people are stupid, and nobody wants to take credit for their own stupidity.  Brakes are a safety issue, so any time someone comes in asking to do something non-factory with their brake setup, most counter people will make sure the customer is aware of what they're doing, and also make sure they didn't just mix up a couple cars, which is a common enough occurance.  If something were to go wrong and the brakes didn't function properly, you can bet the person who bought the part would come back and try to sue the store they got it from.

For example, I once had a guy come in and ask me for a female inverted flare cap.  I had to ask him why, so he told me he wanted to cap off the front brake line going to the right side caliper:-|  Turns out the caliper on his '65 volvo was leaking and he didn't have the money to fix/replace it, so he wanted to just cap off the line.  I spent 10 minutes trying to explain to him what would happen if he were to do such a thing.  Eventually he asked me if it was a better idea to cap off both front lines!  I finally flat out refused to sell him something that would do what he wanted, on grounds that I didn't think it was safe or ethical, and I didn't want him cruising around with one front brake and smashing into someone else on (or off) the road.

If you like that one Steve, we have a guy around here that had a caliper go out on his older Jeep (CJ,YJ, whatever). He just unbolted it and wired it up out of the way!
