Miss Gypsy is almost enough reason for me to come out but I think you east coaster will have enough to deal with instead of me knocking on your door.

Be careful and please don't be afraid to ask each other for help if the need arise.

As of right now (4:20am EST), it's lookin like Dave's area is gettin whacked. Hope ya'll are doing okay. I had to do a special assignment at work this past evening, "storm patrol". On the way in at 6pm you could clearly see the banded clouds from the outer edges. We only got the light band rains I mentioned earlier. The boss told me we were already approved funding to go. "Allegedly" we'll go to either Charlotte or NYC...if needed.

:confu Okay, I'm sure Charlotte is leveled by now! :sarc

If I can be any help to you guys please let me know!

Ponyman, if you end up in NYC I'll buy you a beer for helping out. I've already been told I'm working storm cleanup on Monday. We will see how bad this gets.

I'm sure Dave is getting blasted pretty good. It's definitely going to be a 24 hour event for anyone in it unless it picks up forward speed. Backside winds were stronger here than the start of the hurricane. We got lucky AGAIN in Myrtle Beach

I forgot to mention that on my drive home yesterday from up-north, I saw a long caravan of line trucks, obviously going north to help out in restoring power to those areas with power line damage.  It was nice to see, as usually the line trucks are heading towards the south to help us out!

Actually, it is kind of impressive that the various power companies share their resources when needed and without the gubbermint telling them to do so.

Apologies for the long delay in providing an update.  We were without electricity/internet/cell service up until late yesterday.

Damage report is minimal:

  -  A broken limb poked a large hole in the backside roof of the guest house.  The limb must have snapped and then fell much later after the brunt of the strom had passed as there was no interior water damage from the heavy rains.

  -  10 years ago I planted a dozen Leland Cypress trees along the property line to create a privacy wall.  As the trees matured this idea worked out great.  Not so much anymore... the winds up-rooted and bent over most of the now 20+ foot tall trees.  We were able to use the Jeeps winch to stand some of the lesser damaged trees back up, but we had to cut the rest down.

  -  The greenhouse lost a few clear roof panels.

  -  In the front yard a 110 foot 80 year old Poplar tree snapped at about the 40 foot mark and the upper 70 feet started to fall towards the front of the house before it got caught up in an adjacent tree.  This was probably the most significant event.  Cutting down a tree that is broken halfway up is not a fun task.  With a tree rope, the Jeep pulling and a couple cuts on the base of the tree, we got it to fall exactly where we wanted it without any property damage.

  -  The yard/property looks like a war zone from all of the broken tree limbs laying around.

We pretty much took a direct hit.  Guess what?  It was windy and it rained.  LOL.  We lost power early Saturday morning.  I spent Sunday and Monday fixing the above areas and am happy to be sitting at the office today.  I don't believe I have the energy left in me to run a chainsaw for another day.  The heavy rain that I feared never materialized.  We got ~7 inches and our stream rapidly cleared all of the rain water off the property.  The Sound behind the property did surge significantly, but not enough to affect me.

Some of our neighbors were much less fortunate than us.  I drove around a little bit late yesterday and the falling tree damage is extensive.  Firewood will be real cheap this year!  On a 2 mile long road next to our house, with approx. 500 homes, there has to be easily over 1000 trees down and 100 of the houses with some kind of wind/tree related damage.

Thanks for the well wishes from everyone and Gabby and I have decided that if a Cat 3 storm ever bears down on us we will definitely be evacuating inland!

Glad to hear everyone made it through the storm OK.  Especially you Dave after I went to my parent's lot on the Pamlico River outside of Belhaven.  It looks like a bomb went off there.  There are houses that are just gone.  You find a piece of a roof here and a pot there, but we have to assume the rest is in the river somewhere.  Luckily my Dad only keeps a camper there and he pulled it out on Thursday.  Went to the homestead Monday and Tuesday to help family with clean-up and to deliver some ice since it seems it was worth its weight in gold and everyone was out.  There were still some without power this morning.  I rode out the hurricane in a patrol car in Raleigh.  Nothing much to report other than me cussing at the many people who lack the common sense that God gave a goat and wouldn't stay home.  See you yahoos in a couple weeks and we'll raise a beer to surviving an earthquake and hurricane in the same week.

Now that's funny!

The REALLY funny thing is...Brian's actually putting it nicely how stupid people can get!

Example from hurricane Gaston which brushed us here: "Well sir the reason I've stopped you is because you're driving the wrong way, head on into oncoming traffic on a divided roadway. Cars won't see you in this pouring rain and high winds. Why would you do that?!" "Well officer, because I saw ya'll had my side of the road blocked off because of the power poles across them". Duuhhhhhhhh! :wtf  :char

BTW, my rule is if I'm gettin' wet, you ARE gettin' a ticket!

Funny, that rule is in my book too.  During the peak of our weather here, single car crash.  Lady didn't understand why she was getting a ticket.  I politely explained that the crash probably had something to do with her driving over too fast for the 25+ winds, small river flowing across the road she was driving on, and the fact that I could see the metal on her bald rear tires.  It wasn't mother nature's fault mam.   :soapboxrant
