Funny, I was thinking about starting a topic about this the other day. I know the difference between a 67 and 68, but really dont know the differences between the 64.5, 65 and 66 cars or between the 69 and 70, or the 71-73 for that matter. I figured it would be cool to post something to help others spot them.

There is a 69 or 70 around the block from me, but I'm not sure how to tell what year it is.

So here it is, share your knowledge. How do you tell the difference between the years:

64.5- 66

67-68
no turn signals in lower front fender on '67
no FORD logo on the hood of the '68
grilles are different, '68 being flatter emblems
MUSTANG is in script on the '68
rear vents behind doors on '67's
'68 tailight rings have black rings, '67 are chrome[/li][/list]

69-70

71-73

I ask.........and that is usually where the confusion starts. It is amazing how many do not know what is what on their own cars. A local fellow had no idea his car started life as a 6. He was wanting to go back to original until I showed him that.

66 coral has no arms, unless a GT, then only arms to the sides, not top and bottom.

66 has three "fingers going forward on chrome behind doors, 65 and early has single, small chrome scoop looking trim. Not all cars had this in either year.

66 has 5 gauge dash as does 65 GT, the rest are Falcon style, long sweeping speedo.

66 gas cap has no plastic, 65 has black plastic around emblem.

66 grill is more like a billet unit with long lines across the car, 65 grill is more of a screen look.

66 VIN starts with 6, earlies ones start with 5.

This is just a quick look as it is going by (except for the VIN), but with all things being changed, it is sometimes hard to say for sure. I claim no positive ID from any of this. lol

71 - 3 still say Mustang but are HUGE.......

So, when you see a mustang driving down the road, whats the first thing you look at to tell? For me, if its coming towards me I look at the grille and then I look for the vents behind the door if I'm looking at a 67/68 car. If I'm behind the car its hard to tell because you cant always tell wether the trim around the tailights has the black on them or not, so I have to pull along side or wait for it to turn.

First is to get the year group which is easy. Then, like you, the grill/emblem, side trim, tail lights/gas cap. Then something that has been changed comes by and I say hmmmmm.  I do like change though..... that is the '66 horse with no coral, a '66 grill, and a '32 Ford V8 emblem soon to have light behind the grill.

The easiest way I tell the difference between the 69 and 70 is the headlights.  69 is the only year that Mustangs had a dual headlight system (until I read about them, I just thought them to be gt/fog lights).  70s have what appear to be vents to the outside of the headlight.

I could go on and on about the underdash harness differences between each year!  1968, in particular, started out with features from 1967, and then changed to its unique design.

69 has front side marker in the valance and a 70 has it in the fender.
69 has a dished in rear body panel with 3 separate openings on each side for the taillights, 70 has on big hole on each side and a flat rear body panel.
69 has side scoops (except boss 302) 70 does not.
70 rear marker lights are larger.
