reverse flow pump/timing chain cover
« on: March, 20, 2009, 01:27:50 PM »
Still in the A/C planning stages. (http://www.stangfix.com/testforum/index.php?topic=860.0) Since I need to change to a reverse flow water pump, is there a difference in the timing chain covers?

Current setup has the normal classic Mustang rotating pump, drivers side lower hose connection, manual fuel pump mount, and front dip stick mounting. (Dang, gotta take an updated pic, wiring changed and neater, different valve covers, coil moved, radiator cap relocated, different air cleaner, new lower hose.....)

Yes.  The main difference being on most reverse flow timing covers the inlet and outlet ports for the water pump are shaped differently.  The water pump will still bolt up and work okay, but due to the different port design it won't flow optimumly.  Kinda like having rectangular intake ports on an intake manifold and round ports on a cylinder head.... air will still pass through, but not optimumly.

Pete,

I have both types of covers. I can't find pics of the later style but here is the older. If you looked at both you will see a noticeable difference right away.

Pete,

From Mikes most excellent picture, here's the difference in the ports I was referring to earlier.  The other style timing cover will have "round" ports, whereas the one pictured has "D" shaped ports.  Water will still flow with the wrong pump, but it's better to port match the water pump to the timing cover.

In case anyone else needs to see the difference, here is the late model timing cover from a 1987 5.0.

mike did you ever figure out how you going to convert everything are you just going to use all the fox body components. or are you going to touse the march kit that puts it in the same setup as the fox body. im going to use 30135 mrach kit heres a link to what it looks likehttp://mustangforums.com/forum/classic-mustangs/527106-the-stangs-new-engine.html

if your going with the stock fox body setup i have all  the a/c brackets and i also have ford racing fox body pulleys for sale. i decided to go with the march
