Can you turn the engine by hand? Letting the clutch out while rolling should have turned the engine. If it did, then your issue is in fuel or spark.

Ok, you lost me at you were on a hill but the wheels wouldn't turn when you let the clutch out?
First you get rolling  ~3,5,10mph something rolling but not fast, normally a couple guys can push it fast enough on a flat road. Put the key at the on or 'run' position (where the key is while you're driving), then you let the clutch out in 2nd and it spins the motor, then push the clutch back in and the motor should be running.

Ok, back to Pete's question, can you turn the engine by hand with a ratchet on the crank bolt?

When you try starting it with the key does anything happen at all? Is the starter trying? No noises? Have you tried spinning it by hand yet?

Can't see how it would be the tranny if you push the clutch in (assuming you can) and turn the key over.  Sounds like the motor to me.  Is the Starter stuck against the flywheel?

We need a Saturday lunchtime update  :rant

I suggest pulling the plugs out and try turning it over.
My bet is that one or more cyl's has hydo locked for some reason.
If its already broken...I can't hurt it!

Yeh  , you're right Craig.Sorry , my mistake.Didn't read it very well.
As suggested , try to rotate the crankshaft by a wrench at the crankshaft damper bolt.Clockwise of course.

These are the same as the OEM Ford ministarters from teh 1990s and the same as the $175 Ford Racing ministarter. They seem to be very well made too, despite how CHEAP the price is.  :peter

Agreed. Exact starter I'm running. No issues whatsoever. Spins the stroker over and starts at a bump of the key hot, cold, hot soaked, etc.

Yeah, do not run the large wire to the starter from the same side of the solenoid it's on now. Run it from the battery side and the small wire from the starter side.

The starter motor needs to have power on it all the time. If you run them both to the starter side it will act stupid.
