Original Spare ?
« on: April, 29, 2011, 11:49:52 AM »
My Wife's 68 has a spare that I think was original to the car.  I have keep it for almost 20 years.  I need to put a usable one in for her safety.  What would ya'll do with this spare, I do not think that I want to keep storing it.

The concours crowd might want such a spare tire.  Post it on the Want Ads on our sister site: www.concoursmustang.com

The question is what size is the spare? When I was a teen with my second Mustang and really liking the "white letter" tires, dad used to get them for me. Something to do with the fact that he worked for Firestone. So if you look at this pic of my Mustang from when I was in high school, you will notice the "wide O ovals" on it. FYI E70-14 in the front and G60-14 in the rear. F70's were too big and would rub, but I think that was the factory size?

Where do you get a late model space saver?  Is it a certain new ford that will fit?

You can usually find them pretty easily at the Pick & Pull.  Mustangs have the right bolt pattern (if they're 5 lugs), also some other Fords (perhaps Crown Vics and Lincolns) and cars of other makes as well.  You can check pretty easily as long as there's a Mustang at the yard.  Just test the wheels on the Mustang til you find the right pattern.  Or you can take a piece of cardboard and mark the lug holes from your spare and match it up.

A bit harder to find are aluminum space savers.
