I need a favor.
« on: April, 28, 2011, 03:40:14 PM »
For all you craigslist surfers.

After struggling with the original Speed  density harness on my EFI swap. I have decided to bite the bullet and buy the RJM injection harness. The harness is only designed for Mass air, so I need to find a new computer and Mass air sensor.
I have been searching Ebay and most on there seem ridiculously priced or they are for manual trans.
I tired the local junkyards and craigslist and I am coming up empty.

If anyone comes across a 89-93 5.0 computer  or mass air sensor on craigslist let me know.
Or if anyone knows of someone selling the RJM injection harness.
The computer should be A9P F3ZF-12A650-FB for the auto.

Thanks  :beer

I don't have a computer.. but I "think" I've got two MAFs.  I have no idea if they work, but if you pay for shipping, you can have them.

Pat,

I have a mass air sensor, it's a C&L that has the tube inside for the 24 lb injectors, you can get different tubes for different sized injectors.  And I have an extra computer at home.  It for a 5 speed transmission, not an auto.  But it's a CA computer which is an A9S.  The federal 5-speed computer which is the A9L.  There's a couple of the scalars and functions that are different between the two and I couldn't use my Tweecer module and play with the tune.  but for a stock motor, it should work just fine.

Have you tried corral.net classified ads?  That's where I got my A9L.

C&L is the maker of the mass air meter.  Before the wife decided to part out her '89 GT and let me have the motor, she replaced the mass air meter with a different manufacturer: Pro-M.  We were fighting the dreaded idle surge with the E303 cam, and she was hoping that the problem was the mass air meter.  It wasn't.  So the meter is in good shape, just a spare.  I've been tuning around the Pro-M, and the calibration curves are a little different.  So, I can't swap out, unless I want to start over from square 1.

Sorry -- but that all I have for computers.  From reading on the Corral forums, people have been able to purchase remanufactured computers from their local autopart store.  But they probably have a pretty good price tag on 'em.

C&L is an aftermarket MAF.

Thanks guys. I never heard of C&L before.

I found this on Corral.net.

he's down to $175 for all of it shipped. Does that sound reasonable?

C&L meters are a good meter.  to change injector sizes, you just need to change out the tube.  With the Pro-M meter that I'm running, if I go up to 30 lb injectors like I want to...I need a new meter.

$175 shipped doesn't sound too bad.  Looking at what computers, they're going for around $100.  Plus you get the meter, and wiring harness.

Is the motor stock or modified?

My motor or his?
Mine is mostly stock exept for a trick flow intake. Not sure what his was. he mentioned a quarter horse? Is that a mod chip?
I just registered on corral.net and can't post yet.

I was wondering about your motor.  If it's pretty much stock, then you'll probably be using the 19 lb. injectors, and not have any issues.

The quarter horse is a tuner made by Moates.  If you start modifying the engine, the stock program will need to be modified.  You can either send all your info to a business like Diablo and they will burn you a chip.  Or if you're adventurous you can try and do it yourself with a tuner, like the Quarter horse or a Tweecer.

My motor is slightly modified and I've been working on tuning it myself.  I bought a different tuning chip called Tweecer.  They just plug into the stock computer at a connector where he mentioned he removed the tape.  My Tweecer is circled in red.  And then it just plugs into a laptop, and you've got the complete progam to mess up...I mean modify.  It doesn't take a whole lot of mods to blow the computer's mind.  I'm running the E303 cam, which is fairly mild.  But it's just enough that the stock computer doesn't like it.  It will run rich, then over compensate and run lean, and then rich, then lean...all the while the idle is going from about 600 to 1500...until it dips enough to finally die.  This is known as the dreaded idle surge.  It took several trips going into work datalogging some of the computer's parameters, and modifying the tune get it to idle, somewhat.  I'm no longer dying at every stop light and stop sign.  YEAH.  But I still have a ways to go.  When it's cold, I'm running pretty lean, and at times it's running a bit rich.

I must have gotten lucky on my 331, cobra intake, 24# injectors, 70MM maf and an E303 cam with a stock A9L.... runs a little on the rich side, but I don't get the idle surging other than the first 30-45 seconds after a cold start.   I thought the surging was moreso related to the Air Idle Control valve.

Anyway Rapid Rabbit...  A few years ago I picked up a Ford Motorsport M-9000-A51 Speed Density to Mass Air conversion kit.  Unfortunately it is for a stick car.  The only difference being that it uses the A9S 'puter versus the A9P.  I sold the A9P a while ago.   Let me know if your interested as the ECM is new, the MAF was used on my car for just over 1000 miles before I rebuilt / upgraded the engine... It has the adapter that goes between your stock speed density harness, and MAF based ECM. It also has the MAF bracket, and harness.  because its all virtually new,  I'm not looking to break it up.  The advantage is you wouldn't need to buy the ron morris harness as it is supposed to work with your existing speed density harness...  I've got other new parts such as 02 sensors and relay kit, TAB / TAD sensors...   used rebuilt 19# injectors and other stuff if you are interested.

IMO the easiest thing to do is to buy a reman unit from autozone... or any autoparts store that carries the Carone brand... its got a warranty so it's hard to go wrong.

A9L (manual) - Cardone part number:  78-4352
A9P (auto trans) - Cardone part number:  78-5895

Advance auto sells them for $132 with a one year warranty.  If you have ANY other ECU, you get $45 off that price by using it as a core.

Unless you want to mod your car, no reason to have it chipped.

That may be my best option. They have it for 147 and 20% off - core. it would end up being $86.

I can live with that. Do you think it would reliable?

So if he modified the computer should I stay away from it?

Not at all, I wouldn't think twice about it.  The modified tune is stored in the tuner, not the computer.  If I was to remove the tweecer from my car, I would be running (and stalling alot!!) a stock tune.

But if you go with an Autozone computer, and still need an mass air meter, let me know I have the mass air meter just sitting on a shelf.  You can order new calibration tubes directly from C&L for $32. Calibration Tubes

I wonder if the difference is that you're running a stroker, and I'm not.  It almost made me start doing some serious drinking to try and figure out how to tune efi!!!

Pat I'm sure you'd prefer to obtain things all together instead of having to piecemeal it, but I've got a stock mass air housing. It doesn't have the sensor installed in it, but you're welcome to it if you want it. Just shoot me a PM if you do.

Stock MAF's are a dime a dozen...  pretty sure I have a couple in boxes in the attic. I have a C+L on my Fox and like it due to the face you can change the sampling tubes for different injectors. A9P ECM's are usually pretty reasonable as well, most people think you need to swap to an A9L when you do a 5 speed swap but that's not the case. I'm running a 5 speed on an A9P with no issues.

I ordered the ECM from Autozone this morning. $100 with Tax.  :shrug
Advance auto was cheaper with the 20% discount, but they were not available to order.

So now I just need the maf sensor and housing.

Thanks for all the help everybody.

I've read somewhere, probably on the corral.net forums...that you can run an automatic computer with a 5-speed, but not the other way around.  But, I've never tried either way.

That seems to be what I am seeing too.

So while I'm at it, does it pay to upgrade the stock throttle body to a larger one?
I wasn't planning on any mods because I was going to use the speed density. But now that i'm converting to mass air I want to do what would work best.
