On the way to Knotts, Shag dumps a fuel pump - WTF !
« on: April, 12, 2011, 06:18:45 AM »
After driving 300+ miles and being only 17 miles from Knotts,  Shag's mechanical fuel pump decides to take a dump during major Los Angeles traffic jam.  Moving maybe 2-3 mph, going up an incline, being 3-4 lanes over on the left was probably the worst setting.  With a sudden shutdown and seeing all the fricken traffic all around me, all I could do is jump out and have the wife get behind the wheel as I attempt to push the turd up hill and over 3-4 lanes to the right shoulder.

Luckily some fellow motorist who saw the situation, jumped out of their cars and helped push along with fellow Stangfixer KBMWRS, etc.  Calls immediately went out to our group who were in front and behind me about the issue and in no time we were all on the shoulder.  After a few minutes of diagnosis we deemed it was infact the fuel pump.  Thus I called AAA to have the car flat bedded to the hotel and meanwhile we sent the rest of the group ahead to check in and go find me a fuel pump.   SacBill found a local auto parts store who had one and when we finally arrived at the hotel, the new fuel pump was waiting.

Though everyone was ready to help me install the pump, due to the time of day and the crappy mood I was in, I decided it was best to break away from the problem and go have a liquid dinner.  The following morning I got up early and with the help of the NorCal gang, installed the new pump and was back in action.

I can't thank all my friends enough for dealing with my shitty mood and helping me get through this.

Sorry it happened for sure but all seemed to work out OK. These little things make for great stories years down the road.

Sorry you had the problem Craig but this right here is why I love driving a classic car. There is no way in HeLA that would have happend if you were in some other car. I bet those folks were glad to be touching such a nice car and more than happy to help. And the bad mood, that happends when our kids get sick, your normal. Well, normal for a car-guy.

Glad everthing went well !
I would be a shame if the car had severe mechanical problems after so many test miles.
Lucky it was only the fuel pump and the NorCAl gang was in the neighboardhood !!

Still , I think Craig , you have a little dent in your pride ????   ( Hope you know what I mean , don't know the saying )

The more important question is... was the WIFE driving it while it happened?    :confu

Alas... The so called new part fails.  I put a new fuel pump on mine at got about 5oo miles till it was leaking puddles on the floor. :wtf
Show where the quality control has gone these days, The old one lasted 25 years before the diaphram got weak but never leaked a drop.
If its already broken...I can't hurt it!

Glad to hear all is well.

Maybe we need a decorated toilet seat for Craig to haul around whenever he is out in Shag and display at shows until someone else (Mark) breaks down and then we ship the seat off to that person and so on.  The person would be required to autograph it and then we would have a record of the traveling toilet seat and who has had it.

the break down would have to be at or on the way to a show, cruise or on the way to or on the track....

What do you guys think?

It wasn't the pump taking a dump on me that pissed me off.  It was infact that it happened in the traffic I hate the most.  Los Angeles's.

And yes had something broke due to my error in install etc, that would have bothered me big time, but I guess you
can't control things such as a fuel pump going ka poop.

Other than that, the car ran just fine after putting around 1,000 miles on it over the weekend.

Sitting across from Craig at the Outback I can verify that crappy mood and liquid dinner.  :wth

He was 180 degrees different Saturday night. Either because Shag was fixed and running again or he got lucky Friday night.  :sm_TMI

Sorry to hear your troubles Craig. Seems like the best decision was to have a liquid dinner. Glad to hear it all worked out!
