What holds your gas tank in?
« on: January, 28, 2011, 09:31:33 PM »
So I know my 67 was a Frankenstien so I can't trust what WAS on the car....so.

When I replaced the gas tank a couple weeks ago I used new sheet metal screws, albeit a little longer. Just didn't seem right, so today i replaced them all with bolts and locking nuts with washers.

Were sheet metal screws really the norm????

I was just reading about this today in one of the Mustang Monthly mags in my restroom collection. Pee you!

It was in the May 2010 edition to be exact, under the article "install a 22-gallon fuel tank".

It made reference to "using bolts instead of factory-style sheetmetal screws." which makes sense if these cars weren't really meant to last more than ten years.

What holds my gas tank in? hmmm...  Considering the amount of rust in my car, I'd say hopes and dreams.

Yep, held in with sheet metal screws. I think this is fine. The gas tank is not part of the structure.

I thought mine had bolts, but maybe they were just larger hex head sheet metal screws.  Im gonna have to go look.

My car still had the original tank and screws. I replaced the tank with a new one but, cleaned up and reused the original screws.

Please excuse the dust, the maid has been busy.

When I restored my car, I put that tank armor plate in, but it seemed silly to use the sheet metal screws which would get pulled out in a collision so I welded in 1" x 1/8" steel strips around the perimeter and then redrilled the holes and bolted the tank armor and gas tank in using 1/4" grade 8 bolts and nuts.  Seemed like the right thing to do

I made a seperate steel frame out of 3/8" x 1-1/2" steel flat bar that sets on top of the tank flange.   Grade 8 bolts go through the frame tank and floor with washers and nylock nuts underneath.  Cheap insurance IMO...

Hex head sheet metal screws.

+2  With a frankenstang I really doubt anyone will question your use of bolts over the sheetmetal screws

Mike I used  :gs and it worked well enough to get a ton of cash for mine!

Oh, sorry it was the narcotics kicking in.  I don't see why the bolts wouldn't me a bad idea and a good improvement over stock.

Hex head sheet metal screws.
Just to belabor the obvious, the way the holes are dimpled make these screws a little sturdier than if they just went into punched or drilled holes. Not that that's sayin' much.
