Shifter rebuild
« on: November, 13, 2010, 05:57:39 AM »
While the shifter is out I like to rebuild/repair everything possible. Other than the bushing kits for the linkage, what else is there? For instance, what is used for the spring loaded detent for reverse? Is there a rebuild kit?

Thanks,
Gary

I just saw your other post on the shifter identification question... It looks like a Hurst Competion Plus from the photos in the other thread.    It should be stamped as such on the side.     I came across  this link a few weeks ago.

I've got one I plan on going through again... Sometimes just getting all the dirt out and re assembling it with fresh grease makes a big difference.

I replied to your other thread with rebuilding instructions.

After sitting for years with sand intrusion, my Comp Plus works just fine after cleaning it up and greasing it.  I don't see why yours wouldn't.

Thanks, all. I think I'll go with the cleaning/lubing route. After reading some of the material provided, it doesn't look like attempting to dissemble the "reverse detent" springs is a good idea unless absolutely needed.

That's generally the best way to go Stump.  These Hursts are so durable that generally a good cleaning and the Hurst bushing kit is all that's necessary.

Good. That will leave me more time for rebuilding the transmission, the carburetor, the rear end, and replacing freeze plugs... Did I say "DAMN"!!!
