So my buddies and I picked up a 'new' car yesterday...
« on: January, 17, 2009, 08:30:56 AM »
Got up at 5:30 and drove out to this guy's place in BFE to pick up this car.  I stumbled upon it while looking at a semi-wrecked '90 Mustang GT he also has (and I'm also getting for me).  1970 Challenger, straight with a few small dings and dents, intact interior, no motor/tranny in the car, nearly complete 440 conversion on the car, original rally wheels, R/T hood, two 440 blocks (one of which is a performance build and has never been run), two 727 trannys, a separate V8 rear, and innumerable small but valuable parts.  How much?  *drum roll*  $4k!!!!!!!  We basically stole this thing.

My friend has been looing for a decent mopar starter project for the past year.  This is basically his dream come true.  With little work, we could get it clean and on the street.

Oh, and that's the previous owner of the car in the pic, not any of us:P

Nice!  And for $4k.  I thought that only bought a wheel from an old school mopar.

Yes, yes, and an intact data plate to boot.  It's even got current (non-op) registration.

Kinda.  He's moving to LA soon and he needs to get rid of all the crap on his property, including the project cars, ASAP.  He originally picked it up from some asian guy at a swap meet for $1k back in the late 90's.  It was a project car for him and his son, but his son found other things to do so it didn't get a lot of attention.  I don't think he has a clue what the Mopar market is like.  I got really lucky by being the first guy to really take a look at it.  There was a local mechanic that was very interested as well, but the owner decided that I (and my buddy) had first dibs, and that he'd rather sell it to us than a mechanic.

He's also selling the '70 Chevelle in the pic for $8500, about 90% completed, including a 420hp ZZ383 motor that's never been fired.  I'll post a couple pics of the 5.0 after I pick it up.  The roof's done, but at $650 it's super cheap for a low mileage fox body.

But there's a size limit, and it kept bugging out when I tried to do more than one.

The Challenger looks like a nice solid car.  Great find!

A couple years ago...... heck, more like 4 years ago, my younger brother called it quits on a 20 year marriage.  It had been a long time coming and I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.  Being the "older brother", he leaned on me to help him get his new life on track.  Besides helping him move 20 years worth of crap from his house, it seemed he was calling me everyday for something or another.  One of the things I helped him with was unloading a 1970 Challenger R/T 440 car.  I was with him back in the mid-90's when he bought/stole the car for $2200.  Aside from driving it home and parking it, he never again drove the car.  Over the years it got stripped, dipped, some minor body work done, primed, jammed and the re-assembly had started to take place.  The doors, hood and fenders had been painted, but the body had only been jammed, this struck me as odd, but whatever.  It was a roller with the drivetrain reinstalled when he asked me to help him sell it.  It took off like a rocket on Ebay.  Factory 4 speed car with a pistol grip shifter.   With the auction sitting at $12k on day 3, my brother got a call from a buyer in Massachusetts who offered $16k cash.  I told my brother to wait it out, but he panic'ed and pulled the plug on the auction.  The Mass buyer showed up as promised, saw right through the situation.... the car was still being stored at my brothers ex's house.... and he ended up driving home with the car and a truck load of bolt-ons for $11k.

This is one of those things that my brother and I NEVER talk about.

He still has his HS car in a storage unit here in town.  1973 Plymouth 'Cuda with a wicked 340 bought from a local racer.  It went through a mild restoration back in the mid 80's, ended up sitting outside and developing some rust issues before it went into storage approx. 15 years ago.  He says he'll "never" sell it and bugs me at every get together to pull it out of storage and restore it for him.  That ain't happening in this lifetime.

Wow, $11k?  4 years ago?  That's basically the car we're going to build, minus the m/t (the console isn't stick-friendly).  I'd guess a real one in that condition with the proper drivetrain would be worth closer to $30k.

Like I said, it's something that we don't ever talk about.  He knows he screwed up and should have listened to me to keep the auction going.
