What is your favorite tool?
« on: May, 25, 2010, 08:27:39 AM »
Now that I have a media blasting cabinet, I can not believe I ever worked on a car without one!

Dirty, stained, and nasty looking old parts go in and beautiful parts come out! Even rubber parts...

I find myself resisting the urge to media blast everything. So far I have only had one disappointment - stainless steel comes out matte finish.

Preparation for paint has never been better, and the effects on bare steel and aluminum are just fantastic.

So what other tools have you guys got that you just can't live without???

This has always been one of my most useful tools:

Ratcheting handle and stubby screwdrivers.  The handle can be used with any screwdriver with a 1/4" round shank.

It's a toss up between my pneumatic zizz-wheel or the impact gun.... I'd probably die if I had to use either a (gulp) hacksaw or (gulp) 4-way lug wrench.

I like my air compressor, its not big enough for me anymore, but its the heart of so much that happens in my garage.

My favorite tool? The one I just bought, typically. It will have just saved the day in some way or I wouldn't have gotten it.

If I had to name one, though, I'd have to say my newest flashlight my daughter got me for Christmas. LED with multiple stages of brightness with multi-position head and a spring-loaded tripod base that extends out from the handle at the push of a button. I've yet to run into a situation where I couldn't configure it to get light where I needed it.

Where do you get one Frank?

I think I got mine from a Snap-On truck years ago, but you can get it from Amazon, among other places:

I'll have to get another one, my flat head screwdriver broke.

For me to properly answer, this thread would need to be in a passworded forum.

My next favorite tool is my 2 post asymmetric lift, no question about it.  Having to work at a comfortable height for whatever I do saves my back, knees and other assorted body parts.  It's great for detailing the lower part of the car prior to a show.  The only drawback?  It attracts riff-raff who want to use my garage without the requisite fee of Wattles beer.

Mine is a toss up between my welders and my air compressor.  I cant believe I went so long without either and if I lost one now I wouldn't know what to do in the garage any more.

The CA Stangfix crew, I have never felt more welcome, relaxed, motivated, and inspired as I did at the Fabulous Fords Forever and our occasional Nor-CAL GTG's. Sincerely a really great group of people.  :10

If people don't count under the favorite tools category, I would have to choose my Craftsman socket wrenches.

I've held off from replying thus far because it's a very tough call.  I want to say air compressor, cutoff tool, drill press, belt / disc sander, Gearwrenches, cordless drill, etc.  My nail gun is the most fun.  My plasma cutter is the coolest.  But, when I look at all I do, it's either my bench grinder (with wire wheel) or my vise.  I'd have to pick my vise as the favorite of all.  How anyone could operate in a "shop" without one is beyond me.
After...
