Someone isn't going to be a happy winner...
« on: May, 28, 2010, 11:38:05 AM »
I originally bid on these last night and thought they were the perfect plates for my car, being a movie and home theater fan.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=190400202433

Turns out they are not clear from DMV and he is smoking something.  With his change of the description I took the opportunity to retract my bid and call it a day.

Frank - any rule about a 66 car being ok, if the plates aren't clear?

What does that mean, "THX were the first 3 letters in the movie "American Grafitti"." one of the cars in the movie had a THX plate?

THX 138 was the plate.  Google THX 1138 for more information...

It sounds like the plates are currently or were recently registered to a '66 vehicle which does mean that they can only be re-registered to another '66.  There's some speculation that after a few years of non-registration, a plate will drop out of the DMV's database and would then be registerable to any year.  This is only speculation.  :omg

Just get your plates and stickers from Crusty.  His are clear, and I was able to register late '67 (according to the sequence) plates onto my '66.

The guy is correct, though, in that it MUST have a '66 sticker on it, even though no '66 model year car would have EVER had a '66 sticker on it.  They would have all had either '67 or '68 stickers depending on whether the car was bought in '66 or '67.

The California DMV, though, is too stupid to realize this, though.

Actually, early 66's would have had a '66 sticker.  Back then, all renewals were due in December, so a car registered before then would have gotten a '66 sticker.

Justin has been trying to get a pair of plates from me, but I don't have any that start with T or U.  :sad

The California DMV, though, is too stupid to realize this, though.

Like when the woman argued with me that the VIN on my 66 wasn't long enough...  She swore blind I was crazy and that there had to be more numbers!

I am so glad to be in Utah.  Our DMV is so easy to deal with.  I just took my YOM plates that were marked 65 in and registered them to the 65 and the same with the 67.  So easy!  When I went to register my 5x10 garden trailer they told me I didn't need to reg it, just transfer the title.  All I have to do is to drag it to them and let them look at the VIN on the tongue and it is done!  I remove the CA plate and hang it on the wall.

My car trailer they handed me the new plate right there and said thank you.

When we reg the new GMC Cheyanne just bought, since she is in North Dakota all she does is send us a copy of the plates from her Durrango and we apply them to the GMC and she bolts them on and we mail her the new stickers!

Never a line bigger than 2-3 people, most times I just walk right up to the counter, sit in the chair and start asking questions and get the answers.  In the event they don't know the answer, they make a call to SLC and get an answer right away.

So nice and less than 1/2 the cost of CA registration!

Here's the latest foolishness from the DMV:  At the bottom of the YOM form there's a place for the clerk to write the sticker color.  The '64 and '69 stickers are an off white color.  If the clerk writes yellow instead of white, then DMV headquarters will deny the application because the sticker is the wrong color.  :amaz
