Cleaning up Shag's roof siderail molding pieces, with Waldopro's help I see that there was some type of adhesive foam strip or something that was residing between these pieces and the body surface. Can I just use a roll of thin adhesive foam maybe 3/4-1" wide?

yep. Just make sure it's CLOSED cell foam.

Ended up getting some of the 3M stuff from Home Depot. Got like 450 inches for 10-15 bucks. They also sell 60 inches for 5 bucks, but the bulk pricing sucked me in.
