scam?
« on: March, 17, 2010, 06:43:40 AM »
I spotted an ad yesterday for a '66 Fast back that said they were trying to sell it for $2,800.  I laughed thinking it was a typo but what the heck, I sent them an e-mail.

A woman wrote back saying she got the car in a divorce and indeed is trying to sell it for that amount.

However, she also said something about wanting to use e-bay services for "secure payment".

The car was listed as local in the ad so my thought was why don't I just bring you the money in cash.

Does something sound "off" with this one?

Thinking it was a scam and just to humor myself I wrote back and said there was no need for a payment service I could just bring cash while seeing the car in person.

They wrote back that conveniently ; "The car is already at the shipping company in San Jose, California sealed and ready for the shipping. I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. I'm very busy with my job and I'm left out of the town so I can't meet in person with you so this is the reason why I chose to sell my car over the internet."

Uhuh...and I am John Wayne.  Basically I replied telling them they are a scum bag scam artist and to get lost.

Don't use e-bay services for "secure payment"; instead, use the Bank of Midlife, where we only have modest "handling charges" and never ever scam anyone.

Got a good one the other day. They actually called me!
Some lady in Italy they said wanting me to buy a 66 GT350 for $5000

She even gave me her phone number. I called back and same story that she was out of town and needed to sell it. She sent me a link to craigslist. I sent the email and number to local PD
