I think those helicoil-like things have something to do with the thermactor setup.  I think mine have them as well.

The casting number will be on the cylinder face of the head along the intake side.

Exactly.  This link should have all the info you need about your heads, including a history lesson as they evolved  :ecit   http://www.cartechbooks.com/vstore/showdetl.cfm?st=0&st2=0&st3=0&CATID=23&Product_ID=2726&DID=6&chapter=2089

And a picture of a 289 head casting:

C8AE

I can't thank you enough for the info!  I couldn't find my numbers or read over unless I just passed over them while reading through the historical documents.  C8AE   The 8 almost looked like a 6, but I'm pretty sure it's an 8.  So I can see the little hump in the exhaust port the article talked about for the thermactor pump channel~ bummer, I have thremactor heads.  Hopefully these heads will suffice my needs.  Another learning lesson~ thank you!!

It was given to me by an old roommate while I was watching/yelling at the local news one night.

Specifically, it was a story on the local sideshow "phenomenon" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideshow_%28automobile_exhibition%29.
