Air cleaner height
« on: March, 04, 2010, 02:36:42 PM »
How much higher or lower can the top of an air cleaner be say in reference to the top of the front shocks?  Not having the hood on is a bear trying to figure out what air cleaner works.  I have a holley brand one with a 1.125" drop and it's giving me grief with the throttle linkage, etc so I think I need to raise the cleaner up a little.

With margin, sighting across the fenders over the air cleaner lid would tell you if the lid clears the fenders or not.  If it does, you're guaranteed clearance.  If not, you'll have to use the hood.

I think you have a little more clearance if you look at the body lines of the hood.

Nah, I take it back, the shock would be under the higher part of the hood... just wanted to post whore

I just laid a straightedge across my fenders and then measured from the bottom of the straightedge to the top of my round  HIPO air clearer.  IT was 2 3/16"  With the hood closed, it looks like I have less than 1/2" of clearance.

Honestly it depends on the diameter and shape of your air cleaner.  An oval Cobra air cleaner may have clearance issues that a round air cleaner wouldn't have even though they may be installed at the same height.  The ribbing and curvature of the hood all play a part.

Maybe I should lay the hood in place.  With the radiator out I should be able to look up and see where my current lowered air cleaner sits in relationship to the hood.

A lot of work but it would take all the guess work out of this issue.

Craig that's exactly how I did mine.  With radiator removed I installed the hood and checked the clearance.  A little play-doh on the air cleaner lid in areas that look close will let you know exactly how close things are.  Keep in mind that your motor will move so if it's that tight it will likely rub.

I learned a trick on here to put your digital camera under the hood on 10 second timer then close the hood. I put a telescoping pencil magnet on my intake with the air cleaner off and slowly closed the hood then measured the length of the telescoping magnet to get the height clearance, a tape measure 1/2 locked may work also. Don't have a hood or engine in at the moment, sorry.

No, not really.

Disconnect both hood hinge springs and lay the hinges flat.

Place some doubled over (for thickness) terri-cloth towels at each back corner of the hood opening (fender to cowl corners).

Gently lay the hood onto the towels and adjust the towel thickness until the hood somewhat lines up.

At this point you should be able to determine whether or not the air cleaner will interfere with the hood.
