Author Topic: TCI rear suspension - first problem (Read 540 times)

I started installing the TCI rear suspension today on the boy's car. The rear sub-frame connector mounts at the former front leaf spring mount. You need to drill three holes into the cabin and bolt through. In the car you are suppose to install a three hole plate with the bolts. These come up under the rear seat. As can be seen in the below photo, there is a raise in the floor (underneath the rear seat) that would keep the plate from laying flat. The third hole in fact is on the downside of the raised section.

Has this floor plan been replaced?

Does anyone else have pics of their floor pan?

Yes I know I have the plate installed one hole too far forward. I am contemplating cutting it to leave the first two holes in front of the raised area.

HELP???

I don't think your floors have been replaced. In the second picture, you can see the factory date stamp in the sheetmetal. It is to the left of the vertical piece which comes up off the floor.

That is a stock floor. That "rib" belongs there.

I wouldn't worry about it as you should really be welding the suspension brackets to the car anyway. Use an existing hole (like the spring mount) to locate but then weld it up.

That would be my first phone call.

You shouldn't have to modify the car to fit "custom" bracketry. The bracketry should be designed to fit the car, not the other way around. I'd call and get their input before doing anything. It could be something as simple as "Oops, we sent you the wrong brackets".

This bracket actually holds the rear part of the sub-frame connectors. A bolt goes through the bracket into the spring mount. The upper link for the rear end is attached with this bolt. As for welding the plate in, I will have to think about that, having it bolt in allows for all the pieces to fit together and then get tightened up. If it is welded in, I may have a lot of fun getting the back side of the sub-frame connector lined up.

I did talk with the TCI techs today, and as expected I am the oddball. Of all the kits they have sold, this is the first time they have ran into this issue. One possible solution is to notch the rib, weld in a flat piece and then bolt the bar where it belongs.

Lots of kits are designed to "bolt-in" but fair much better welded. I would bolt it together and get it adjusted properly and then weld. That's the path I am taking with mine. Nothing at this level is ever as easy as pay for it and bolt it on.

That rib is stock Ford. I highly doubt you're the first to have this issue. I'm sure others just made do and didn't call them...or they forgot about the other callers. :wm?

That rib is for the parking brake cable on a 64.5/65. They were relocated for 66. If you are running stock parking brake(which I doubt considering the rear suspension) then you'll have to modify the bracing or weld everything in. Otherwise, hammer the rib down.
