Author Topic: 67 289 AC pulleys? (Read 362 times)

All right, I'm trying to be prepared for all the options I'm adding before installing the motor. I have a '67 Coupe with a 289, alt. and PS stock - single groove wp pulley, double groove crank pulley. I want to drop a bunch of engine pieces at the powder coaters next week and the pulleys are some of them. Leaning towards the CAA A/C kit but it'll be a Sanden R134A type whatever I get.

I have picked up a 3 groove crank pulley with the larger outer pulley for the AC.

Do I need a double pulley for the wp? My stock single pulley one is 6" diam., 2 1/2" high so I need to find a match for it on fleabay, guessing I need another pulley on the front making the height ~3"? or is a 2nd pulley needed on WP, what does it drive?

I have the list of what ford part#'s are what size/# of pulleys, will it make much difference if I have to use a 6 1/2" diam. pulley vs. my 6" stock, I'm guessing that would give me a min. underdrive cond. which is OK (alt. is a 100A unit).

I'd be very hesitant about powder coating the actual pulley grooves...at least check to see with others if it has been done and whether the powder coating can withstand the friction and still look good.

Thanks guys, I hadn't thought about the grooves and if they'd be slippery after coating, I'll have them mask the contact surfaces.

Any ideas if I need a 1 or 2 groove WP pulley?

IMO, its not a bad thing to have a two groove WP pulley. If one belt ever goes, you can still drive home without power steering or a charging alternator. However, you can't if the car is overheating. Which is one reason i did it this way:

I can't remember where I read this, but an alternator belt can start slipping at about 100 amps. so, I'd definitely use a dual pulley for the alt and water pump.
