Fuel filler Mods
« on: September, 09, 2009, 11:46:57 AM »
okay, I tried today to make a fuel filler neck like the newer cars with a smaller hole. I cut some flat stock, left tabs on either side (for support). One large and one smaller. Then sliced into the neck with my sawsall halfway on one side and small notch with dremmel on the other. Slid the disk in for test fit, then cut the hole, and welded it in. My welds weren't too pretty so I ground them smooth. Here it is:

what do ya think? Havn't installed it yet... Hope it works.

Thanks Sam

I may be a bit presumptuous here, but this just may qualify for the StangFix-ORP award for engineering.

If it works you better start stock piling filler necks. :toot

That was going to be my comment--I wonder how this would work with OUR pumps.  Would the auto-shutoff still prevent proper filling?  You'll need to take a road trip to CA and try it out.  :gs

I should make you a deal, testing and exchange or something. I hate to charge anything and not know if it will work on most pumps. It worked great here but each station could be another story...

Ok. I'll cut you some slack. The flap would only impede a funnel anyway. Just yankin' your chain  :naug

I do have a spare filler neck I picked up when I was thinking of doing azpete's mod...I just need to have someone else do the welding for me.

I like that. How hard would it be to remove that section of a newer filler and section it in, flapper door and all?

GET THAT THING PATENTED!   :wor

I noticed in one of your "assembled" pics that the plate had a small (1/8" ?) hole in it.  Was that intended as some sort of vent?  Or just a coincidence?

The 1/8" (good eyes) hole is a drain in case some fuel would get on the gas cap side of the plate. That way it can drain back into the tank. It will also double as a vent I guess...

That was my original plan actually but the few I found at the "U-Pull-It" were plastic. If you know of a doner car that's metal let me know and I'll look for one.

I do have a later model filler neck with a metal "flapper" piece that I thought might work.

I went to the hardware store and got some 2 1/4" washers that are exactly the right size for this.  The hole in the center is about the same size as the hole in the aforementioned later filler neck.  My thought was to cut into the right and left sides of the filler neck leaving just a tiny bit uncut at the top and bottom, grind flats in two opposite sides of the washer, then slide the washer into the cuts, and weld.  This should accomplish the vent/drainback feature that you put into yours, as there would be a tiny gap at the top and bottom after it's all welded in.

Whaddya think?

Craig,

Undoubtedly one of the best modifications to come around in long time, congrats!

When fueling, does the fuel nozzle extend past the new plate leaving the nozzles "splash sensor port" on the dry side of the plate?

Or does the fuel nozzles splash sensor port also extend beyond the plate?

If the fuel nozzles splash sensor port does not extend onto the "wet side" of the plate, will it still function triggering the nozzle to shut off?

For posterity, everyone here needs to remember that they saw it here first!  So twenty years from now when someone says they're getting ready to do the "Scott Drake" mod to their fuel filler neck, we can all remind them that the true name of the modification should be "Craig's Little Hole".   Similar of course to the much debated Shelby/Arning drop argument that appears every 30 minutes or so on internet forums.

An advantage to having the flapper over Craig's Little Hole would be anti splash back upon hard driving. Not that any of us do that but I have seen some slosh leak out the venting on others cars.

Brilliant solution!!!!  Question:  Have you considered the possibility of a spark if the pump nozzle scrapes across the hole opening?  Might those plastic flappers be plastic for that reason?
