My wifes 2000 coupe repaint & resto

Mach1Mark

Ramrod extraordinaire

Although my lovely bride is not a 'hardcore' Mustanger she loves her V6 coupe she calls 'Sally'. She bought Sally new in February 2000 because she 'had to have one' in memory of a boy she dated in high school and college (me) who was always driving a Mustang. We've known each other since we were seventeen years old and only recently reconnected and married. She 'gets' my Mustang mania and has enjoyed watching me restomod my '65 coupe which is the car we dated in back in the day. During my resto she has never, ever asked how much I was spending on my car, even when multiple large boxes were showing up on our porch. She asked me a year ago if I would 'freshen up' her Mustang and I told her I would when mine was nearing completion. I got an estimate last August to repair the 'whiskey bumps' and shoot the original color. This week I refreshed the estimate and stripped some parts off to make the taping easier. Yesterday I drove Sally to Maaco so she could be put in the que. The estimator called me very early this morning to advise me the paint shop supervisor had found some additional areas he thought we should fix since they wanted my wife to be happy with her 'new' horse when she comes home. There are also some interior and exterior items I will be replacing however, nothing outside of stock (she wont let me do ANYTHING to Sally as far as modding her. She says I have two Mustangs to mod all I want). We MAY add some new rims and tires but nothing else. :-\

nice story, my wife also didn't want me to "modify" her 2007 V6 Mustang either! But I talked her into a few things...

Does Maaco paint original colors? I like that green.

Electric green? She'll be ready to cruse with you when there both completed, nice.
She might but she likes being my right seat tease . . . I have difficulty remembering the paint color. The code is SU which is Amazon Green (Electric Green is SW). I should put more brain cells into remembering that.

From what I gather they will paint a car any color you want (I didn't ask about metallic). The Maaco here has some criteria for what the metal prep has to be. So far Ive been pleased with what Ive seen on the cars in the shop and what they've proposed for Sally.

that's good. I had a 93 Foxbody that had been painted by Maaco. It looked good but wasn't a factory color. I bought it like that so I didn't know if you could get factory colors. The only thing that bothered me on mine was sonce they did a color change, they didn't do a great job in the door jams and trunk. Engine compartment was rattle can black. But outside looked great

We are not doing jams so I hope there isn't too much overspray inside the opening on the weather strips.

Got a call from MAACO this afternoon advising me that Sally is ready to come home. Will pick her up late tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully get some pics posted soon. We are expecting rain tomorrow night turning to snow. Pics maybe on Sunday.

cool! can't wait to see how you like it. It may be an option for my son and his 99GT. It's multi-colored right now...IMG_5914.jpg

Update: I picked up Sally yesterday from Maaco (ahead of blizzard 2017) and she looks like she used to. Total for repairs and base coat/clear coat was $1359. I did discover a large paint run or missed body filler ridge at the top of the pass side rear wheel opening. I didn't notice it yesterday when I did the walk around. Overall a very good experience. Ive ordered some new exterior parts from Late Model Restoration to enhance the exterior and will be installing those items when they arrive. Also shopping for some items on ebay. Meanwhile, I sanded and repainted the wiper arms.

it does look good!
So your cost was for paint and bodywork? That's not a bad price. I wonder what you get for the cheap TV ad price? Keep us posted on the progress.

For the cheap price, they cover the glass and chrome, scuff the paint and shoot....each door ding repair adds to the cost. That is a decent price for a driver for sure.

The parts I ordered from LMR.com arrived on Wednesday and I installed them today (SVE tinted headlight housings, Ford OEM front fender emblems, SVE LED third brake light and some push-in fasteners for the radiator cover).

I was a little hesitant to order the SVE LED third brake light but the instructions for swapping the wiring harness were easy to follow an I think it gives the rear a little more modern look.

How did the headlights fit? When we replaced them on a 91 fox body we couldn't get them to aim right. Wish I had saved the oem lights! We need to replace the headlights and third light on the 03 Mach

Headlight housings were no problem to install. I haven't adjusted their height as my wife doesn't drive at night. I did need to adjust the last new set I installed in 2014. There is a small allen head screw jack on top of each housing so its pretty easy.

Yes, but the set we put in the Fox body had to be adjusted so far out the lens was no longer flush with the body of the car. I am hesitant to tray again!

I'd take the chance, the ones I bought are Ford Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) parts so they should fit.

The next step in the resto process is to collect that needed interior pieces. The OEM steering wheel has been crumbling and somehow gotten bent forward at the top. I scored an NOS replacement unit today for a great price!!
