Say “No” to EPA’s Threat to Motorsports: SEMA Opposes Regulation Prohibiting Conversion of Vehicles into Racecars

SEMA has issued a press release informing the public that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is aiming to make it illegal to convert automobiles originally designed for on-road use into racecars, even though such conversions have been done for decades. Under the EPA’s proposed rule, it would also be illegal to sell any performance-related products for those cars. The EPA’s proposal would have a devastating impact on motorsports since many types of racing rely on production vehicles that have been modified for use strictly at the track.

OH yes.....your article made it so much more clear. It is not their "intent"....so let's all trust the government. They are trying to enforce the very rules that Staggers said was not part of the original law. But as I stated above, it will eliminate the livelihood of many aftermarket companies and forever impact the classic car hobby. I suppose all of these hard working, honest living companies are none of your concern!?!?! There is no reason the EPA should even begin to have this much power. I am all for clean air, but this is too much.

I'm with Ken on this. Clean air yes but go after the major polluters. It may be slight of words but in a legal trial that's what will be used.

Might want to read this...

http://arstechnica.com/cars/2016/02...t-illegal-to-turn-an-old-car-into-a-race-car/

"The EPA has made it as clear as it can (which is, sadly, not all that clear) that this effort does not actually target legitimate racers. After all, what would any kind of enforcement strategy look like across well over 1,000 racetracks across the country?"

Anyone interested might want to read this too.....

http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=EPA-HQ-OAR-2014-0827-0002

After reading it you can see that the author(s) of the article Gary posted certainly DIDN'T bother read it. It's also clear that, not surprisingly, the EPA Deputy Press Sec. that issued the referenced statement was as full of shit as a Christmas goose! WHAT, the EPA would LIE to us?!?! Say it ain't so!!

If you want to avoid all of the politi-speak and go to the heart EPA's proposed changes, go to the section labeled "Subpart G Special Compliance Provisions" § 1036.601 paragraph (a)(2). Keep in mind this is only part of the verbiage the EPA is proposing a change to.

If you REALLY want to dig into to it to see how badly the EPA lied, open the letter that Ken (kb3) linked, then open the EPA proposal I linked. Use the CFR references from the attorney letter to search the text in the EPA proposal.

You can also go to:

http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/ECFR?page=browse

Open the applicable CFR that the EPA references to view the current language. You don't to be a lawyer to see what the EPA is trying to pull. They figure most people won't take the time to actually check what they're saying, you know, like the hack(s) that wrote the article saying they weren't trying to do it!

Yeah if nothing else, looking it all up is good for killing time!;);)

Isn't the EPA subject to Congressional oversight? Don't the laws come from Congress? Does any of this have a chance in Hell of getting thru the GOP Congress and the conservative Supreme Court?

In a perfect world yes, but government agencies have the ability to issue regulations that are not voted on by congress. Yes congress could overturn it in federal court, but that would take effort on their part.

Instead of living in your ideological world maybe you should take the time to read and be educated. Otherwise it might be best for you to step out of this discussion.

Another good read from SEMA is located here: https://www.sema.org/sema-enews/201...email&utm_content=50765031&utm_campaign=eNews

While it's supposed to work that way, it hasn't. Did ya hear the one about this guy named Obama issuing law in the form of executive orders? No Congress there. Did ya hear the one about the FAA recently issuing regulations and penalties regarding registration of drones? No Congress there. As a matter of fact the law specifically forbade the FAA from passing the drone regs..They didn't care, just did it anyway. When the IRS takes the power to seize your passport (yes, IRS not State Dept!), who protects us from that? When an agency tasked with protecting the environment creates an ecological disaster by releasing hazardous waste into a river, who fines them? No one. What do they have to say for themselves? Nothing, they just ignore everyone. In case you're missing my point, the agencies in Washington don't give a rat's ass about the laws Congress wrote...and why should they? The entire Congress is a bunch of nutless, overpaid bastards that look out for themselves and their cronies. BTW, I do mean both sides of the aisle!

I almost overlooked the last few words in your question Gary......"conservative" Supreme Court? Which Supreme Court are YOU referring too?!? Certainly not the Federal one!

Thought I could slip that one in. :p
You guys don't trust government, I don't trust SEMA. To each their own. Neither deserve our trust, IMHO.

Really? SEMA has no ability to affect your life unless you are involved in the aftermarket industry, where I might add, do mountains of good for their members. The government on the other hand can and does affect everyone's life.

Gary, I really think you enjoy being a contrarian because you can't be as obstinate as you appear online.

Obstinate? Maybe a little. Contrarian seems to fit.
Aside from the differences between gov and SEMA that you stated, they are very much a like. Both entities primary purpose is to benefit its members financially by selling loads of bullshit to the general public.
