Looking at a convertible today project

After doing my fastback, I'm leaning on the group for advice on a convertible. What spots are usual spot for convertibles? Are they different than a fastback?
 
Funny it needs a new one also. It was custom made with beer bottle shadows in the rear. Needs both lower sections of the rear quarters and paint
 
The unique problems with convertibles is the unibody down below. Check carefully for door alignment when opening/closing to see if the frame is rotting or solid.
 
All panels line up door were good too. I'm having the car go on a rack to check the underside next week
 
As said before , look if the alignment of doors , hood , trunk are in good shape.
Look if they didn't shave the edges of those doors , hood and trunk .(Tell me how I know )
Better to buy an rotten orginal one then buying one that is good looking but being patched up.
Take some measurements ( crosssection of the engine compartment )
Are both door openings even wide ? ( a-pillar to b-pillar ).
Open the front hood and look from behind with the trunk also open , if all lines up like the opening or center of the radio.( hood and trunk shows good alignment )

Lots of problems with the drip gutter under the roof surround. They were designed to catch rain water coming off the roof and direct it to the drain holes at the front of the rear wheels. They tend to rot out and then dump all the rain water into the trunk. Also check the front floors and rockers for rot. The convertibles have an inner and outer rocker panel for added rigidness that is not required on a Mustang with a steel roof. These tend to rot away and the car loses its physical integrity. Convertibles are also notorious for having leaky roof seals that contribute to major front floor board rotting. If all that is good, I would still suggest adding a Monte Carlo Bar, an export brace and sub-frame connectors. I did that to mine and it handles solid as a rock now.
