Stang dieing issue

Occasionally dying at a stop but in gear doesn't quite sound like a carb problem to me. That sounds more like a vacuum problem or intermittent electrical problem. Does it ever die when stopped but not in gear? If not, then I would definitely suspect vacuum.

Could also be two issues compounding one another.

Here's something I should have asked before.

What is your idle set at?

Does it miss at idle?

Sigh..... at the risk of repeating myself (and seemingly being ignored), check your floats and then needle and seats. This involves removing the bowls. After reassembling check/set the float levels. Since you experience your problems when turning, that generally points to a float bowl issue as the fuel will slosh some (naturally), in the bowl during turns or going over bumps.

All and I mean ALL of the symptoms you've described are classic signs of a lean carb condition at idle. If your idle speed is set too low (and or you idle mixture is too low), you'll also run lean. A vacuum leak would further aggravate the condition (hence my original recommendation to check this), although you said you've confirmed no vacuum leaks. As a side note, a vacuum leak alone (unless massive), wouldn't normally cause the problems you've described. When everything else is tuned/working properly a vacuum leak normally manifests itself as a higher than normal rpm at idle.

One thing I noticed in your photos was your idle mixture screws on the metering blocks seemed to be backed out quit far. While that normally causes a rich idle, it may be set that way in order to compensate for lack of fuel delivery. Once you check your bowls, do an initial idle speed adjustment in park. Connect a vacuum gauge to a constant vacuum and set your idle mixture screws. Readjust your idle speed as necessary. Remember to check it again in drive AND with AC on. Both will drop your idle speed down.

If you want to keep chasing electrical "problems" have at it, but IMHO I think you're wasting your efforts. Good luck!

Mine had the same problem occasionally at stops while cold and in gear. I moved the fast idle up a little and it has disappeared. If the gas level in the sight lenses is about mid lens, I think that is nominal. At least it is for my Road Demon.

I've never seen a Holley carb in the last 50 years that didn't run better than when the float levels were set lower tha the Holley specifications.

I haven't seen a volley since the early 80s that worked right without a bunch of work.

We all digress though.

Did you adjust your carb and does the issue still exist?

Have not been able to get back to that since I found out my brake rotors were bad, trying to get all the brakes done first.

I fixed the brakes, had to also replace the master cylinder.

Replaced all the spark plugs (I will have to post a picture since they look bad)

Adjust the front flat and now the gas is at the lower end of the sight glass.

Seems to run at idle OK, drives OK.

wants to stall when breaking.

at WOT I get a lot of black smoke and sounds like it sucking a lot of air.

Check all of your rubber tits on the carb and vacuum tree. They may be cracked causing v accuum leaks. I had that happen once.

Checked the rubber tits and hoses, all appear in good shape. Here is the picture of the plugs 1-4. the picture of 5-6 was blurry.
Number 5 and 7 look like 2 and 6 and 8 look like #1.

Next is adjusting the idle mixture screws, any tips?

Is the black smoke at WOT related to the back bowl?

Running pretty rich.

Maybe your carb is too big.

Maybe, but too late to change for the power tour. I think it is running the best possible but still get black smoke at WOT and some pinging. I do not think I will be driving at WOT on the Tour.

OK you have two issues.

Pinging is a result of timing.

The rich condition is a carb issue. Can you install smaller jets? This may help.

For timing you need to know if your can is stock or what?
