Seatbelt warning light

KBMWRS

Welcome truth back

I have the seatbelt warning light that’s attached under the panel by the ignition switch. Of course it never worked….well it sort of does. Put a bulb in it and it lights up but never turns off. All these years I have just had the bulb removed so I thought I’d buy a new relay and switch it out.

Contacted Midlife and bought a relay for the seat belt light for a ’67. I removed the steering wheel and the instrument cluster. Now to find the relay. Damn if the thing isn’t as far away and difficult to get to as possible. Its up behind the wiper motor at the top of the firewall. And to make matters worse it isn’t the relay that Mid sent. It seems it must have been replaced before and it is the round style versus the correct version (small rectangular metal box C7AB-10B924-BI ) which has connector 2 tabs (1 for power from ignition and 1 for two wires from light socket).
Of course the aftermarket just doesn’t sell the relay. One must purchase the replacement with the seatbelt light for $60 (ScottDrake)…and it’s the rectangle style but now in cheap plastic.

My son got his arm up there and unplugged the wires from the relay. I plugged in the relay Mid sent and it worked…for about 3 seconds, meaning the light only stays on 3 seconds. If I’m going to have this thing work I want a little more time on it.
So I looked into more modern digital timers at www.curioustech.net which I read about on All Fords Forum reply by Joe Marshall
http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/classic-tech/780561-1969-seat-belt-warning-light-wiring.html
I checked out the timers and contacted Greg from CuriousTech (greg@curioustech.net) . I explained what I wanted and it’s use. The TMR-1-6A-30V ($13) works for this application sans LED light and I requested a 15 second delay, received it in a couple days. It is about the size of a postage stamp and naked (meaning nothing covering the circuits).

I cut the connector plug off the original wiring and soldered the wires as noted.

The timer from curious tech has three wires. A red, a white, and a black.

The white wire connects to the power wire (green in my case) to the light.

The black is a ground and connects to the ground wire (white in my case) to the light, then in turn ground it to the chassis.

The red wire connects to a switched ignition source (I used the fused power wire that the original seatbelt warning light used sourced to the ignition switch).

I covered the timer with a heavy rubber tape like in a small pocket to prevent it from touching anything behind the dash.
All hooked up the timer has the warning light on for exactly 15 seconds.

Hey it’s not much but it’s at least one more thing I got working on the ol’67.
