Online story about my Super Stock Mustang

The engine has been out a long time. Tomorrow I will take the bellhousing and starter to my engine builder so he can install it on his dyno Monday. Tuesday or Wednesday we should be making a few dyno pulls. The engine is for B/SA with cast iron heads and intake.

That is what it looked like when it was taken out years ago now it has the cast iron

Very cool Rusty....Awesome story. My father used to run BS/A then SS/GA in his 67 (converted to 68) fastback from 69-71. Mainly at englishtown and Island dragway in NJ. So wish this car was still around. I used to love his stories about this era of drag racing...really interesting stuff...I sure he spent some time trying to catch your national record.

If I remember his stories correctly, and its quite possible that I dont.... When he ran SS/GA I believe the best he ever got to was the 11.40 range. He eventually blew up his 428CJ and built a 427 for the car, taking it out of the SS/GA class....With the 427 he told me he ran some 11.1's, but soon after he put the 427 in the car, it was wrecked. He was flat towing it with his 1970 barracuda and one of the arms on the tow bar broke. Car swung around and side swiped his barracuda. After that he parted it out and sold it.

That's a shame it was wrecked.

In 1970 - 1971 my 1968 Mustang ran in SS/FA and I built the 1969 in 1971 to race in SS/GA. The quickest and fasted I ran in SS/GA was a Suffolk in 1974. I set the record at 11.26 and the next day went 11.13 at 122.95.

Ya its a bummer, I would love to still have that car. Thankfully my father later found my current 67 S code mustang in 1974 and I still have that one.

Were the tires significantly better by 74? I remember my father telling me that he didnt have a huge budget, so it was always a major problem for him. He had one set of slicks, some days the car hooked up ok, others no.

My father died in 1995, but recently I found one of his old friends who helped him build his car. He was telling me about some of the tricks they used to use...Which I imagine were probably common back then? He was telling about a switch he wired up to the distributor that would (I think) ground out the condenser and retard the timing...Thus giving you a little extra mph for the last 1/3rd of the track. All kinds of little tricks like that to try and deal with what you were allowed to do in the class.

We did not have a very good dyno session. We only got to make three good pulls before the water brake broke on the dyno. The plan was to compare the stock Cobra Jet 735 with the Quick Fuel replacement. We made the three pulls with the 735. 493 HP, 500 HP and 502 HP all around 5900.

I forgot to mention we made 502 hp on 93 octane gas and the timing was set at 34 degrees
