Let's Talk Distributors and Spark Plug Wires

Horseplay

I Don't Care. Do you?

Been a LONG time since I had an old small block running headers. Seeking input/advice/direction on spark plug wire selection.

Nothing too elaborate in the way of ignition system. Likely going to give the new Pertronix Ignitor III a go in one of their billet distributors. Haven't bought the dizzy yet. Leaning toward one with a male tip cap vs. female unless someone can give reason why a female would be better.

Stock exhaust port configuration with 1 5/8" primary tubes (coated Hedman 88300). Looking for experienced guidance on plug boot design/angle. Which fits best? 45 degree? 90? 135? Or is straight the way to go. I haven't got the headers on yet (just picked up from the coater's yesterday) so haven't had a first hand look at clearances.

So tell me what you have/think. I'm open to suggestions. Just want to get it all ordered so I can get it put on!

I am running a duraspark 2 box and distributor in my 85 setup. No problems at all and the looks ok on the inner fender. I forgot to mention that I use motorsport 9 mm wires with 45 degree boots at the headers that clear just fine. the cap has male terminals.

I used MSD 8.5 mm Super Conductor made to fit plug wires for a SBF... the plug boots are adjustable and the coil boot is 90*. the wire separators are the Taylor brand.
Summit sells the wires for about $85. Whatever you do, don't use the MSD streetfire wires...

Good stuff. Thanks.

Keep the info/advice coming.

Straight boots take up to much visual & actual room, IMHO. I'm using black Ford Racing wires, advertised as 135 degrees but isn't it the the same as 45 degrees, depending from which direction it's measured? 135 + 45 = 180 = straight wires. 351w with Hooker Comp headers, my wires are routed like bucleyedemon's. I'm using with a Duraspark distributor male cap and Summit ignitor box. You can get creative and hide the ignitor box under the battery tray.

The MSD 8.5mm wires are very durable. This set is over 10 years old, with somewhere around 80,000 miles on it.
