Questions on Tilt Column Repair

Anyone ever rebuilt a 67 or 68 tilt column?

I have to abused tilt columns that I hope to make into one. The 68 threads are all messed up at the steering wheel mount. the 67 has been shortened. Both tilt mechanisms need a lot of maintenance.

There is a pin/bolt that hold the 2 half's of the tilt together that has threads in the head of it that I can not figure out how to remove, any help?

Do you have the FSM for either year? In the '67 FSM at page 3-33 and 3-34 is reference to a tool that is essentially a threaded puller that allows you to extract the pins (one on each side). I suppose you could fab up something that would work for dis -assembly but you will need a press to put it back together when you are finished. As a preliminary question and at the risk of asking the obvious, why do you think you need to disassemble that joint?

Made my on pivot pin removal tool with a hardened steel 1.75 in screw (46 cents) and a 7/16 socket and a nut (already had). It work like a champ.

The upper and lower bearing were toast, I found them online and order a set.

Got in the new bearings yesterday. The large one on the left is an aftermarket piece for the bottom of the shaft.

Thanks for all those pics.
Nice thread.
Could you give the specs on the bearings ??

I have the tilt back together. Almost ready to install

How do you get the wires out of the old connector without braking it?

Forgot to write down the bearing specs, I will get them later. You can see a part number on the bearing in one of the pictures.

I can not seem to find a new emergency flasher knob, does anyone make it?

On the wires, they are held in place with little barbs. There are three methods I can think of that work:
1. A small screwdriver blade (think jewelers tool) can be used to press the barb down enough to release the wire;
2. There is a specific Lisle tool available for pin release http://www.carid.com/lisle/lisle-terminal-tool-21558394.html?gclid=CNbb7L6D7MMCFYhhfgodtw8Aqw ;
3. An old style ball point pen cartridge (the end without the ball point) can be used to compress the barb.

Flasher knobs are reproduced and available from most Mustang Parts houses.

Thanks, It is a 67 Column but has a 68 turn signal harness in it. I will be mounting a 68 steering wheel also.
