Rear ends

So I have a few options. I can rebuild my factory 8 inch with 3.8's/trac lock or I can get a 8.8 from a yard with 3.73's/lsd, or I can find a 9 inch and use that. I know the 9 is the most bullet proof. But At what hp/tq do I need to go all out? I have a cleveland motor right now that's stock/mild. I obviously want to add some power down the road so I am trying to do the rear end right from the start. Thoughts? opinions? its for a 68 coupe.

Being honest with yourself, what is the end goal for this car? Unless you are going to build a 450 hp engine and install a great rear suspension and go drag racing you can do just fine with your current piece. Start popping the clutch at 5000 rpm with sticky slicks and things change fast. Truth be told there are other parts that will usually break first anyway!

suspension in the rear is 5 leaf reverse eye springs. The cleveland should be mid 200's for power and mid 300's for torque and then going up from there. It will be a manual so there will be some clutch dumping and some track days so I definitely don't want to build and 8 inch and then blow it up only to kick myself not for going with the 9 inch from the start if it is a lot stronger.

Your present 8" will survive for a long time behind that engine driven as hard as you want. What trans will you be using? That's where I would expect anything to break. At those power levels though you should be fine.

I'm with horseplay. I have an 8" with 3:73 and traklok in the 65. Should be just fine. I also have a TKO 600 in it.

I doubt I can get enough out of that 289 to break it.

either thinking of going with a t-56 or just using the t-10 until it goes out and I need to replace it.
Break out your hammer, saws and welder if you plan on getting a T-56 in there. That's a big trans that will not fit peacefully. If you want more gears a T-5 will serve you just fine and will bolt right in and the shifter will locate in the stock hole.

there was hurst in there previously so the shifter location was hacked and moved already. I wouldn't necessarily mind hacking up the tunnel as it already was started lol. My fear with a t-5 is that it won't handle the hp/tq from the cleveland. I don't want to invest money into a unit to have it fail and look back and think I should of just went with what I wanted from the get go. That is why I am actually considering just using my t-10 until it fails and then do an up grade down the road after money is spent on everything that is needed at this point.

A T5 will be fine with the engine you described earlier. Just be sure to get a early 90's one (WC) that was rated to 300 ft/lbs of torque and you can have all the fun you want. That's what is going in mine and I will have more power on tap.

Putting in a T56 would require more hacking than just the shifter hole. That is a BIG trans.

I think I am going to end up with a t-5. just have it build really strong with Astro parts or one of there units. Seems like that would be the easiest way moving forward.

I warning on the g force.. I initially was going this route as well and the guys at modern driveline convinced me to go with a tko600 which can handle 600 as well. The argument is its a Tremic. Many people can work on at Tremic if you should have a problem down the road. G force is just not that common.
