Motor getting hot.

I've had the motor in for about a week just running it up and down our airstrip playing with the timing. Motor is running better every day. Only problem is at highway speed, 60 mph 2500 rpm, it gets hot like 220-230. I can let her coast to a almost stop and she'll cool of below 200. Around town it stays around 200. I've had people say it's timing but they weren't sure. My intakes doesn't have water ports on the back side but neither did my other 302 didn't know if anyone else has had this problem.

Couple things come to mind. Belt tension. Could be slipping at higher RPM. Also, at high RPM you could have a radiator hose collapsing, restricting flow.

You are using a thermostat, I presume. Too high of a flow of coolant can also restrict the radiators ability to transfer the heat.
 
Hose is heavy flex. It won't collapse. I have a 160 degree thermostat. I will check the belts. Never thought of that. Thanks.

Could also be running lean. Fatten it up, check the timing and see how that goes on a short hwy run.
 
Try a 180 thermostat. To cool of a thermostat will not close and allow the coolant time in the radiator to dissapate the heat from the coolant.
 
What Pete said. I have never run such a low temp thermostat in any of my SBF engines.
 
Did you change your water pump? If so, is it the correct rotation for your belt setup?
+1 IIRC you had been looking for a new timing cover with the dipstick tube in it. While you can use the older style timing cover, you still need a reverse rotation pump with the newer motor.This is further born out by the fact most folks seem to have overheating problems at low speeds and then cooling down at higher speeds. Yours is backwards from the "normal" problem.
 
Ok. I'll swop out for a 180 tomorrow. I tried it with no thermostat and it pumped water. Even collapsed the hose when I got above 1800. I'm also gonna pull the radiator and have it boiled just in case.

I thought you said the hose couldn't collapse. Confused. Seems since your cruise rpm was higher this might be the issue.
 
I had the same problem. Mine was calcium built up in a few of the lines in the radiator. Ran cool at around town speeds but tried to over heat when on highway. Got a 2 core aluminum radiator with one inch lines. Runs super cool now.
 
This fixed my problem with running hot. My 66, 347 ran 220+ pretty much all the time. Installed this Dual pass from Speedway and fixed it. I did have to have my welder friend straighten out the lower hose for me.

I had the radiator blew out and that fixed it. I guess I got some trash out of the new motor.
