Carb suggestions

I am transplanting a 5.0 into a friend of my son's Maverick. I was planning on installing Ford SEFI similar to what we did in the fastback, but he is running out of time before he heads back to college. We have decided to ditch the EFI until winter break and in the meantime run a carb setup. Having not spent much time studying carbs over the last few years I am looking for advice. He needs a decent 4bbl with electric choke. He is a college student so money is the main issue. Any suggestions?

also, if anyone has a good rebuildable one for sale we could go that route as well.

I've heard nothing but good things about Summit brand carbs. That's what I will be using when I break in my new engine. IMHO, better than dealing with an old rebuild. Open the box and bolt it on. What could be better? Especially for a young, inexperienced kid.

Yep.....Summit carbs have been a pretty easy way to go. Most likely a 600cfm would be plenty.....and allow for upgrades if one desired to stay carded.

I have been very happy with my Summit carb (600 cfm with electric choke). No adjustments were needed from the factory settings. The first start up went fine once I figured out that I needed to prime the bowls with gas:).

I've been using a Summit for approx 2+years (750 vacuum secondary which I converted to manual choke) and am very happy with it.

thanks for the replies! If I can't find him a good deal on a rebuildable Holley or Autolite locally, he may have to spend the money on a new one. Considering it will only be used for 5 months, hard to swallow the new carb price tag on a college kid's budget. It might push him to find more time to work on the car and get the EFI running before September.....there goes my free time!

A used edelbrock 1406 could probably work as well. (600 cfm Elec choke) I have two of them but one is junk and the other is a backup. Both gave about 10 years of service before needing a rebuild on chevy engines. They are pretty plentiful on craigslist and I think are easy to rebuild. I think the main thing to watch for on any used carb is the throttle flange. I would never pay too much for a used carb just because they can be a crapshoot. That said, if you can't find one locally, I have a friend who has a huge collection of Mustang parts including a pile of carbs (Holleys and Autolites I presume) that stands about 3 feet tall. His wife rebuilds them and has quite a positive reputation. I'm sure they would sell you a core or even a rebuilt one.... The only drawback might be distance since they are in MA, but I know they ship worldwide.
