C6 Transmission woes... **(update, I think I know why!)**

Hey Craig,

I don't think you are thinking correctly here. How many years did you drive your car prior to the new radiator/cooler set-up without trans problems? It's when you bypassed the radiator trans cooler that you got into trouble. I would use the cooler in the trans then run it through the auxiliary cooler and back to the trans. Most trans coolers are meant to be just auxiliary units and not stand alone.

Your coolant temps are measured at the engine, not the radiator. The radiator is alot cooler than 190 degrees. Run it back through.

That's a good point.

my new rad doesn't have the trans cooler in it. So I think you guys are all correct but now that I don't have the rad/cooler I need a bigger/better trans cooler.

At mercedes , they just cool the transfluid threw the radiator.
Maybe you can run it : from trans to radiator to extra cooler and back to trans.
And check out which type of transfluid you can use. Maybe their is a difference in heat absorbation or extraction ??
Somewhere between 180°F - 195°F should be your goal I guess.

This is how I routed the C4 cooler for my '65 coupe. Going through the radiator first will pull off a LOT more heat in the fluid than an air-cooled radiator alone. A short course in thermodynamics will confirm this. Then as the trans fluid goes through the external cooler (mine was a Hayden brand, mounted in front of and at the bottom of my stock radiator) it will be cooled even more and more efficiently. Return line to the trans. My modified C4 lived a hard life (racing) and lived to tell the tale.

Sure sounds like Craig bought an inappropriate radiator...

Respectfully,
Capt. Obvious
